The two of them froze simultaneously. A flicker of surprise crossed Xiao Zhongyan's eyes, quickly followed by caution, and then a complex mix of emotions.
Nangong Shuang realized she could no longer hide and stepped forward, whispering, “Xiao Gongzi.”
Xiao Zhongyan cautiously glanced around before replying in a low voice, “Miss Nangong, what brings you here?”
“Just passing by,” Nangong Shuang explained simply, observing Xiao Zhongyan's reaction. “Your injuries haven’t healed; it’s unwise for you to be out here alone. Why are you here?”
Xiao Zhongyan let out a bitter laugh. “There’s a reason I had to come out.” He paused and lowered his voice. “Is our agreement still valid?”
Nangong Shuang nodded slightly. “Of course it is.”
“That's good to hear.” Xiao Zhongyan sighed in relief, but his expression suddenly turned serious. “Be wary of my second brother; he has already begun to take action.”
Nangong Shuang's heart sank. “What kind of action?”
Just as Xiao Zhongyan was about to respond, his expression changed abruptly as he pushed Nangong Shuang aside. “There’s an ambush!”
Before the words left his mouth, a dark arrow shot through the air, aimed directly at Xiao Zhongyan's back!
He swiftly dodged, barely avoiding the arrow, but the tip grazed his arm, causing blood to seep out immediately.
“Run!” He grabbed Nangong Shuang and dashed deeper into the alley.
Nangong Shuang was about to call for Qiao Er when she saw figures in black rushing toward them from a distance. The situation was dire, so she had no choice but to follow Xiao Zhongyan as they fled.
They twisted and turned through the intricate alleyways until they finally shook off their pursuers and hid in a secluded courtyard.
Xiao Zhongyan leaned against the wall, panting heavily; blood continued to flow from the wound on his arm.
Nangong Shuang quickly took out some medicinal powder from her sleeve and bandaged him up. “Who is chasing us?”
Xiao Zhongyan let out a bitter laugh. “People from Shadow Pavilion; they might be sent by my second brother. He has begun to suspect everything, including your identity.”
Nangong Shuang's heart tightened. “What does he know?”
“He discovered that I contacted you without permission and found records of me sneaking into the royal library to look up the Nangong Case files.” Xiao Zhongyan's expression grew grave. “What’s worse is that he clearly tested you during that scene at Li's residence today.”
Nangong Shuang sighed softly. “Yes, I felt it too. He was almost hinting at my connection to the Nangong Family.”
“You must be careful; my second brother is cunning and ruthless. Once he confirms your identity, he won’t hesitate to act.” Xiao Zhongyan warned her. “Especially with tomorrow’s meeting; I suspect he has already learned about it and may set up an ambush.”
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment. “Then let’s change our plans and act early.”
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. “Alright, we’ll meet at Guanyin Temple in the south of the city tonight at midnight and then head to Nangong Ancestral Home together.”
"Tonight at midnight, Guanyin Temple," Nangong Shuang repeated to confirm. "I won't be late."
Xiao Zhongyan stood up and brushed the dust off his sleeves. "I must leave now; if I stay too long, my younger brother will become suspicious."
He took out a cloth bag from his pocket and handed it to Nangong Shuang. "These are some records about the Nangong Family that I found in the family’s secret chamber. They might be useful to you."
Nangong Shuang accepted the bag, feeling grateful. "Thank you."
Xiao Zhongyan shook his head. "No need for thanks. I also want to uncover the truth behind the grievances of the Nangong Family."
With that, he turned and walked away, his back resolute and determined.
Nangong Shuang looked at the bag, her heart filled with mixed emotions. Xiao Zhongyan had risked gathering information for her, even putting himself at odds with his own brother; she didn’t know how to repay this kindness.
Taking a deep breath, Nangong Shuang tucked the bag away carefully and cautiously walked out of the small courtyard, preparing to return to meet Qiao Er.
As she reached the Small Square, she saw Qiao Er anxiously pacing back and forth. Upon spotting Nangong Shuang, Qiao Er rushed over with a sigh of relief. "Sister! Are you alright? I just heard shouting and fighting; I was so worried!"
