The men in black coughed incessantly, their vision obstructed, creating chaos around them. Nangong Shuang seized the opportunity to leap out through a window behind the statue, diving into the curtain of rain.
"Don't let her escape!" An angry shout came from behind, and several men in black followed her through the window, hot on her heels.
The rain intensified, thunder roared, and lightning streaked across the sky with blinding brilliance. Nangong Shuang sprinted down the muddy path, snatching a few reeds from the roadside as she ran. She bit her fingertip to draw blood and smeared it on the reeds before tossing them in different directions.
This was an ancient evasion technique; her blood would attract her pursuers and distract them, buying her precious time to escape. Sure enough, the pursuers spotted the blood trail and split into several groups to chase after it, significantly easing the pressure on Nangong Shuang.
Seizing the moment, she veered into a dense thicket, using the cover of the trees to further distance herself from her pursuers. Rainwater streamed down her cheeks, soaking her completely, but she felt no chill. All that occupied her mind was one thought: Chen Bo was dead, dead before her eyes, and she had been powerless to protect him. The kind old man who had raised her had left her forever in that brief moment of reunion.
Grief and anger intertwined as Nangong Shuang gritted her teeth and pressed on through the rainy night. She knew that to avenge the Nangong Family and Chen Bo, she must first survive.
After running for about fifteen minutes, she came upon a rushing stream swollen by the heavy rain. Without hesitation, Nangong Shuang leaped into the water. The icy current immediately engulfed her, but being a good swimmer, she quickly surfaced and let the current carry her downstream.
The water would wash away her scent and traces, making it harder for her pursuers to find her. After drifting for some distance in the water, Nangong Shuang finally crawled ashore, soaked to the bone and gasping for breath. She hid beneath a large tree and checked her bundle—thankfully, Chen Bo's belongings were safe against the rain.
After resting briefly, Nangong Shuang continued toward the city. The rain had lessened but the night remained pitch black. She needed to return to Qian Mansion before dawn; otherwise, it would raise more suspicions.
As she approached a small hill, a rustling sound suddenly reached her ears! Nangong Shuang stopped alertly and crouched down into the bushes at the roadside.
Before long, a group of people appeared from behind the hill, led by none other than Zheng Yushi in his purple robes!
"My lord, I am incompetent; we let that girl escape," one of the men in black knelt down to plead for forgiveness.
Zheng Yushi's expression darkened: "Useless! How could you let a mere girl elude so many of you?!"
"That girl is exceptionally skilled and adept with poison; we lost several brothers..." The man in black defended himself.
"Shut up!" Zheng Yushi shouted angrily. "If she obtains the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique, the consequences would be unimaginable! Continue searching! Turn this forest upside down if you have to; find her!"
"Yes, my lord!"
Nangong Shuang held her breath and remained motionless in the bushes. Zheng Yushi and his subordinates were just a stone's throw away; any misstep could lead to discovery.
To her surprise, Zheng Yushi suddenly changed his tone and asked, "What happened to that old servant?"
"He has been dealt with cleanly; there will be no traces left," replied the man in black.
Zheng Yushi let out a cold laugh. "Good, that old fool is finally dead. Ten years ago, he escaped by sheer luck, leaving us constantly worried about the secrets of Nangong Mansion being exposed. Now, as long as we capture that girl, we can completely eliminate any future troubles."
"My lord, what about Xiao Gongzi..." the man in black asked cautiously.
A glint of malice flashed in Zheng Yushi's eyes. "Xiao Zhongyan? Hmph, his recent actions have been suspicious; he's secretly investigating the Nangong Case, clearly aware of something. But there's no need to worry. I've already sent someone to keep an eye on him. If he dares to make any moves, we'll capture him immediately!"
