Nangong Shuang felt a surge of confusion. Xiao Zhongyan was investigating the Nangong Case? Moreover, he was seen as a threat by Zheng Yushi? This was completely contrary to her previous assumptions. Could it be that Xiao Zhongyan truly intended to help her uncover the truth?
Lost in thought, she accidentally stepped on a twig, producing a faint crack.
Zheng Yushi sharply turned her head. "Who?!"
Nangong Shuang's heart nearly stopped; her body tensed, ready to flee or fight at any moment. Just as the tension peaked, a long howl suddenly echoed from the distant woods, followed by the sound of galloping hooves approaching!
"Who is it?!" Zheng Yushi exclaimed, looking toward the source of the noise.
"My lord, it seems to be people from Xiao Mansion!" a figure in black exclaimed.
"Damn it!" Zheng Yushi cursed. "That little bastard Xiao Zhongyan dares to ruin my plans! Quick, we must leave! We can't let them find us!"
The group hurriedly mounted their horses and sped off in the opposite direction.
Nangong Shuang let out a long breath, nearly collapsing to the ground. This sudden turn of events had allowed her to escape a crisis!
After waiting for a moment and confirming that Zheng Yushi and her group had indeed left, she cautiously crawled out from the bushes. The sound of hooves grew louder in the distance, but she dared not risk encountering that group, whether they were friend or foe.
Taking a wide detour, Nangong Shuang chose another small path and hurried toward the capital. The rain had stopped, but the sky remained dim, with dawn still some time away.
On her way back to the city, Nangong Shuang felt heavy-hearted. Chen Bo's death had dealt her a significant blow, but it also provided her with crucial information: the truth behind the massacre of the Nangong Family was related to the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique, and the masterminds were connected to both the Shadow Pavilion and certain individuals associated with the Xiao Family.
What troubled her even more was the confrontation between Zheng Yushi and Xiao Zhongyan. Xiao Zhongyan was investigating the Nangong Case and had even sent people into this area; did he anticipate that she would come to see Chen Bo? Was he friend or foe?
Recalling their agreement at Guanyin Temple in two days' time made her even more anxious. Should she go or not?
Before she realized it, a hint of dawn appeared on the horizon. Nangong Shuang quickened her pace and finally returned to the city just before the gates opened. She avoided the main streets and took a detour back to Qian Mansion.
As she climbed over the wall into the courtyard, she noticed Qiao Er pacing back and forth with an anxious expression.
"Sister!" Qiao Er exclaimed upon seeing her, rushing forward with relief. "You’re finally back! I was so worried!"
"I'm fine," Nangong Shuang forced a smile, but Qiao Er immediately sensed something was off.
"Was it Chen Bo? Was it really him?" Qiao Er asked cautiously.
A flicker of pain crossed Nangong Shuang's eyes. "It was him, but... he’s dead. Right before my eyes, killed by someone from Shadow Pavilion."
"What?!" Qiao Er gasped in shock and quickly supported Nangong Shuang into the house. "Sister, are you hurt? Let me see!"
"I'm fine; I'm just a bit tired," Nangong Shuang shook her head as she sat on the bed and took out a bundle from her bosom. "Chen Bo gave me this before he died, saying it could unlock the secret chamber of Nangong Ancestral Home."
Qiao Er took the bundle and carefully unwrapped it. Inside was a piece of jade carved into a pendant, with a blooming plum blossom intricately etched on its surface, so lifelike that one could almost smell its fragrance.
"This is... a plum blossom pendant?" Nangong Shuang murmured, recalling the jade charm that Xiao Zhongyan had given her, noticing the similarities between the two.
"Sister, this pendant looks very special," Qiao Er remarked as she examined it closely. "Look at this plum blossom; the five petals are distinct, and there’s even a small hole in the center, like part of a key."
Nangong Shuang took the pendant and focused her gaze on it. Indeed, the plum blossom was vividly depicted, and at the center of the flower was a tiny groove that seemed to be part of some mechanism.
