Zhang Lu hurried inside, his expression grave as he whispered a few words in Lord Guo's ear. Upon hearing this, Lord Guo's face changed dramatically, and he waved his hand to signal Guan Chunyi and Nangong Shuang to leave. "You two go out first; I have important matters to attend to."
Guan Chunyi wanted to say something, but was gently pulled away by Nangong Shuang. The two bowed and exited the study. Once they had walked a short distance, Nangong Shuang quietly asked, "Miss, your father seems very shocked. Do you know what happened?"
Guan Chunyi shook her head. "I’m not sure. But judging by Zhang Butler's expression, it seems the assassin must have revealed some important information."
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment but did not press further. Back in Guan Chunyi's room, the two settled down with their books and spent a quiet afternoon.
Later that night, as Nangong Shuang was preparing for bed, she suddenly heard a faint noise outside the window. Alert, she sat up and listened intently.
With a soft "whoosh," the window was gently pushed open, and a shadow swiftly leaped into the room!
Nangong Shuang instantly drew a silver needle from beneath her pillow and was about to strike when the figure spoke: "Nangong Shuang, it's me."
The familiar voice made Nangong Shuang gasp in surprise; it was Qiao Er!
"Qiao Er? What are you doing here?" Nangong Shuang exclaimed with both surprise and joy as she rushed forward to grasp Qiao Er's hand.
Qiao Er glanced around to ensure no one was watching before whispering, "Sister, something big has happened! The Qian Mansion has been thoroughly searched; your belongings have all been turned inside out, especially those herbs and silver needles, which raised significant suspicions!"
Nangong Shuang's expression changed. "Who did this?"
"It was people from Guo Residence!" Qiao Er gritted her teeth. "Early this morning, the steward from Guo Residence came to Qian Mansion with several others, claiming they were sent by Lord Guo to retrieve your luggage. Madam Qian didn't suspect anything and allowed them into your room. Little did she know they would ransack it completely and take many things away."
Nangong Shuang felt her heart sink. Among those herbs were several unique formulas from the Nangong Family; if someone studied them closely, her identity could be exposed!
"Not only that," Qiao Er continued, "I overheard them discussing how they needed to investigate your true identity and suspected you were connected to the Nangong Family. Fortunately, I hid the most important items in advance; otherwise, the consequences would be dire."
Nangong Shuang clenched her fists, her mind racing with thoughts. Indeed, that assassin disguised as a servant was a trap meant to test her skills and medical knowledge, while the subsequent search aimed to confirm her identity!
"Lord Guo may have already guessed my identity," Nangong Shuang said solemnly. "Today he hinted at sympathy for the Nangong Family and even gifted my father a manuscript; it’s likely a test."
Qiao Er asked worriedly, "What should we do now? Should we escape tonight?"
Nangong Shuang shook her head. "No. If we leave hastily, it would only solidify our suspicions. Besides, today I obtained an important clue regarding the whereabouts of the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique."
She shared with Qiao Er what she had discovered in the medical book. Upon hearing this, Qiao Er's eyes sparkled with excitement. "So the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique is really hidden in the Nangong Ancestral Home! Sister, we must find it quickly!"
"Not so fast," Nangong Shuang replied calmly. "First, we need to clarify Lord Guo's true stance. If he genuinely feels favorably towards the Nangong Family, he might become an ally; if he is merely testing us, we must proceed with caution."
Qiao Er nodded in agreement. "That makes sense. What should I do?"
After pondering for a moment, Nangong Shuang whispered, "You should return to Qian Mansion and secretly investigate the Guo Family's true attitude towards the Nangong Family. Additionally, look for opportunities to get close to those herbs that were taken away and see if anyone can identify any special formulas from the Nangong Family among them."
"And also," she paused for a moment before continuing, "help me arrange a meeting with Xiao Zhongyan. Now that I have new clues in hand, I need to verify the matter of the jade pendant with him face-to-face. If he truly intends to help me as he claims, then we will have a powerful ally."
