Qiao Er nodded, preparing to leave when suddenly a rustling sound came from outside, as if someone was watching.
"Someone's outside!" Nangong Shuang whispered alertly, quickly extinguishing the candle, plunging the room into darkness.
The two held their breath, listening intently as faint footsteps could be heard outside, followed by hushed conversation. "Is this the right place?"
"It can't be wrong; I saw her move into this room with my own eyes."
"We must search thoroughly tonight. The master specifically instructed us to find the Plum Blossom Token."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank; they knew about the Plum Blossom Token! This confirmed that the Guo Residence was indeed connected to the Nangong Family case and that they were aware of many details!
"Qiao Er, you go first. Exit through the back window and be careful not to be seen," Nangong Shuang instructed in a low voice. "Tell Madam Qian that I'm fine at the Guo Residence and that she needn't worry."
Qiao Er nodded and quietly moved towards the back window while Nangong Shuang quickly tidied up the bed, pretending to be asleep.
Just as Qiao Er was about to climb out of the back window, the front window was suddenly pushed open, and two shadowy figures silently slipped into the room!
Nangong Shuang feigned waking up, sitting up in alarm. "Who? How dare you!"
Seeing this, the intruders revealed their weapons without hesitation. "Don't make a sound; come with us quietly, and we won't hurt you."
Nangong Shuang pretended to be terrified. "Who are you? What do you want?"
"Stop wasting time!" one of the men in black shouted. "Hand over the Plum Blossom Token, or don't blame us for being rude!"
The other began rummaging through the room, turning over beds and cabinets in search of something.
Nangong Shuang observed them closely and noticed their skilled movements; they were clearly trained assassins, likely from the Shadow Pavilion!
"I don't know what you're talking about regarding the Plum Blossom Token. Please leave, or I'll scream for help!" Nangong Shuang raised her voice intentionally to attract attention.
As she expected, footsteps soon approached from outside, likely guards responding to the commotion.
"Damn it!" one of the men cursed under his breath. "We'll let you go this time; we'll come back another day!"
With that, they swiftly climbed out of the window and vanished into the night.
Nangong Shuang let out a long sigh of relief and turned to see that Qiao Er had already escaped amidst the chaos. Before long, guards and maids rushed in to inquire about what had happened.
Nangong Shuang feigned being shaken and recounted how assassins had broken in. Soon after, Lord Guo and Guan Chunyi were alerted and hurried over.
"Another group of assassins?!" Lord Guo's expression darkened. "This is the second time today! Someone, conduct a thorough search of the residence to see if there are any other assassins hiding! Furthermore, starting tomorrow, there will be guards stationed outside Nangong Shuang's room day and night; no more incidents are allowed!"
Guan Chunyi anxiously took Nangong Shuang's hand. "Are you alright? Were you scared? Do you want to rest in my room tonight?"
Nangong Shuang shook her head and said, "Thank you for your concern, Miss. I'm fine. I'm just a bit shaken; a little rest will do."
Lord Guo personally checked the room, confirming it was safe before leading everyone out, leaving two guards to stand watch outside. Guan Chunyi reluctantly returned to her own room, reminding Nangong Shuang to call for help immediately if anything unusual happened.
The room fell silent again as Nangong Shuang sat on the edge of her bed, lost in thought. Clearly, tonight's events were far from simple. The men in black had come straight for the Plum Blossom Token, indicating that someone knew her true identity and was aware that she held the key to unlock the secret chamber of the Nangong Ancestral Home.
The stance of the Guo Residence was becoming increasingly ambiguous. On one hand, Lord Guo had gifted her father's manuscript, suggesting sympathy for the Nangong Family; on the other hand, he had sent people to search her belongings, possibly connected to the assassins from tonight.
