Nangong Shuang retrieved a hidden pouch from beneath her bed, containing two halves of a Plum Blossom Token. She carefully brought them together and examined them closely in the moonlight. The combined Plum Blossom Token revealed faint engravings that formed a simple map, seemingly indicating a location within the Nangong Ancestral Home.
“Mei Xin Pavilion...” Nangong Shuang murmured to herself. “That should be a secret chamber within the Nangong Ancestral Home, specifically for storing important medical texts.”
She recalled her father mentioning such a place during her childhood, but at that time, she had not paid much attention. Now it seemed likely that it could be the hiding place of the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique!
As she pondered this, a faint “click” sound suddenly came from outside the window, as if someone was prying it open. Nangong Shuang sat up straight, gripping the silver needle tightly in her hand. Could those two men in black have returned? Or was it someone else?
The window was gently pushed open, and just as Nangong Shuang prepared to act, a piece of paper fluttered in through the gap before the window was quietly closed again.
Cautiously, Nangong Shuang picked up the note and read it by the moonlight: “The fragrance of plum blossoms drifts in the yellow dusk; we will meet at Guanyin Temple tomorrow at noon. Remember, do not trust the Guo Family; there are eyes from the Shadow Pavilion within the residence. Bring the Plum Blossom Token; it concerns life and death.”
The note was signed with a single character: “Xiao.”
Nangong Shuang's heart raced. This must have been left by Xiao Zhongyan; he not only knew about the Plum Blossom Token but also warned her against trusting the Guo Family! Could it be that Lord Guo was indeed connected to the Shadow Pavilion?
She burned the note and fell into deep thought. The situation was becoming increasingly complex; she needed to be more cautious. Both the Guo Family and Xiao Family could be friends or foes. The only certainty was that she had to find the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique as soon as possible—not only to rid herself of the Cold Poison within her but also to uncover the truth behind the massacre of the Nangong Family!
“Tomorrow at noon, Guanyin Temple...” Nangong Shuang repeated silently in her mind, planning how to slip away under heavy surveillance for their meeting. This would be a dangerous adventure but could also be a crucial step toward uncovering the truth.
The moonlight outside poured like water over her determined face. No matter how perilous the road ahead might be, Nangong Shuang would forge ahead bravely, seeking justice for her family and vengeance for her lost loved ones!
When dawn broke, Nangong Shuang rose as usual to wash and dress, putting on an air of nonchalance. Guan Chunyi came to visit early in the morning, expressing concern about whether she had rested well last night.
“Thank you for your concern, I am fine,” Nangong Shuang replied with a smile. “I’m just a bit tired; I hope you can forgive me.”
Guan Chunyi shook her head. “Sister is too polite. After being disturbed by assassins twice last night, most people would have been scared sick in bed. Your calmness is truly admirable.”
Nangong Shuang smiled modestly. “I have traveled with my master since childhood and have seen many storms; I’ve grown accustomed to it. By the way, is my lord at home today? I would like to thank him in person for his care.”
Guan Chunyi shook her head again. “Father left early for the government office; he said he had urgent matters to attend to. If you have something to discuss, it can wait until he returns.”
Nangong Shuang nodded and did not press further.
After breakfast, Guan Chunyi suggested they take a walk in the garden, which Nangong Shuang gladly accepted. The garden was vast, featuring rockeries and flowing water, pavilions and towers—everything one could wish for. The two strolled through it, enjoying the beauty of spring.
“Sister, over here are peach blossoms; over there are apricot blossoms; further on is a plum grove. Although the plum blossoms have already fallen, their fragrance still lingers enchantingly throughout the garden,” Guan Chunyi enthusiastically introduced each flower.
