Nangong Shuang felt a chill run through her. What did Lord Guo mean? Was he hinting that he knew her true identity, or was there another implication?
"What do you mean, my lord? I am merely a humble country doctor, unrelated to the Nangong Family case," she cautiously replied.
Lord Guo smiled knowingly. "You possess great insight, my lady. Forgive me for speaking plainly, but your medical techniques bear a striking resemblance to those of the Nangong Family. Moreover, with assassins recently seeking the so-called 'Plum Blossom Token,' I cannot help but suspect that you may have ties to the Nangong Family."
At this point, Nangong Shuang realized that further concealment would be futile, yet she could not reveal everything either. After a moment of contemplation, she decided to respond with a mix of truth and deception. "Your keen perception is commendable. Although I am not a direct descendant of the Nangong Family, I have indeed received their medical teachings. My master was a disciple of Old Mr. Nangong, and after the downfall of the Nangong Family, he retreated into the mountains with some medical texts and took me as his apprentice. As for the 'Plum Blossom Token,' I have heard my master mention it as the key to unlocking the secret chamber of the Nangong Family's medical texts, but I have never seen it in person."
Upon hearing this, Lord Guo's expression shifted to one of complexity. "Indeed. I had long suspected that you were no ordinary person. I just didn't expect that there would still be a descendant of the Nangong Family's medical lineage in existence!"
He rose and began pacing again. "Since you have received true teachings from Nan Gong, you must also know about the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.' This book contains significant secrets; if it were to fall into the hands of treacherous individuals, the consequences would be dire."
Nangong Shuang feigned surprise. "You even know about the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique,' my lord?"
Lord Guo nodded. "I have some connections with the Nangong Family and naturally know a thing or two about it. However, its whereabouts have been unknown for many years and has been sought after by certain individuals in court. Now that the Nangong Case is being revisited, those individuals will surely intensify their search; you must exercise caution."
Nangong Shuang pondered this carefully; Lord Guo's attitude seemed to align with her interests, yet he also held back certain information and clearly did not wish to disclose too much.
"Thank you for your warning, my lord. When will the reopening of the case commence? Which officials will be involved?" she asked tentatively.
Lord Guo shook his head. "This matter is confidential; I do not know much about it myself. All I know is that the Crown Prince has personally intervened and ordered the Ministry of Justice to expedite the organization of documents."
At the mention of the Crown Prince, Lord Guo's expression changed slightly, revealing evident concern.
"Nangong Shuang," he suddenly said with a serious tone, "I have an ungracious request." He continued earnestly, "The medical skills of the Nangong Family are renowned worldwide, and the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique' is an extraordinary medical text. If you happen to know its whereabouts, I hope you can share that knowledge with me. I assure you that it will not fall into treacherous hands."
Nangong Shuang felt a surge of wariness; Lord Guo's sudden request raised suspicions about his motives. She replied diplomatically, "Your kindness is overwhelming; although I have learned Nan Gong's medical techniques from my master, I truly know nothing about the whereabouts of the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.' My master only mentioned that this book is hidden somewhere in the Nangong Ancestral Home and requires the Plum Blossom Token to access it; however, he did not specify its exact location."
Lord Guo gazed deeply at her as if trying to discern truth from falsehood in her eyes. After a long pause, he sighed deeply. "Very well; perhaps it is fate that has led us here. The entire Nangong Family has perished unjustly, and with this book lost to time, perhaps it is heaven's arrangement."
He turned to Guan Chunyi. "From today onward, Nangong Shuang should not go out; you must take good care of her. Increase security within the residence—any suspicious individuals are to be turned away at once."
Guan Chunyi nodded in agreement while looking at Nangong Shuang with deep concern etched on his face.
