The room fell silent once more as Nangong Shuang sat by the window, gazing at the encroaching night, her mind swirling with thoughts. Lord Guo's warning, Guan Chunyi's revelations, and the impending arrival of Xiao Zhongmo all hinted at an approaching storm.
The most pressing matter was that tonight, at the hour of the rat, she had to attend an appointment with Xiao Zhongyan at Guanyin Temple to discuss the Plum Blossom Token and the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique. But in such a heavily guarded place as Guo Residence, how could she manage to slip away?
As she pondered this, a faint sound came from outside the window, followed by a piece of paper drifting in through the crack. Nangong Shuang quickly stood up, picked up the note, and saw it contained only a few simple words: "Be cautious late at night; someone intends to assassinate you. Mei Ling is in danger."
The signature was simply "Xiao"!
Nangong Shuang's heart tightened. Xiao Zhongyan had sent another message warning her that someone was planning to assassinate her to seize the Plum Blossom Token! Coupled with Lord Guo's hints from earlier that day, it was clear that significant upheaval was imminent tonight.
She swiftly destroyed the note and began her preparations. First, she separated the two halves of the Plum Blossom Token, hiding one half close to her body and concealing the other in a hidden compartment beneath the bed for safety. Next, she checked her concealed weapons and medicinal powders to ensure everything was ready.
As midnight approached, the outside gradually quieted down. Nangong Shuang lay on her bed, pretending to be asleep while remaining acutely aware of her surroundings.
Time passed without her noticing until suddenly, she heard the faintest sound of footsteps outside—almost imperceptible. Nangong Shuang held her breath and gripped a silver needle tightly.
With a soft click, the window latch was gently pushed open, and a shadow silently slipped into the room!
Nangong Shuang continued to feign sleep while peeking through a narrow gap in her eyelids. The intruder was tall and agile, clearly a skilled fighter. He cautiously surveyed the room before confirming that Nangong Shuang was asleep and began searching.
The intruder first checked the desk drawers, then rummaged through the wardrobe before finally reaching the bedside and meticulously inspecting around the bed. As he bent down to look under it, Nangong Shuang swiftly flipped her wrist and sent a silver needle silently piercing toward his neck!
"Ugh!" The intruder let out a muffled groan and spun around sharply but found his limbs already beginning to numb.
"Who... are you..." he asked laboriously, his voice hoarse.
Nangong Shuang sprang from her bed and coldly replied, "I should be asking you who sent you here? Was it Lord Guo or the Xiao Family?"
The intruder struggled to rise but found himself too weak to do so; he could only lean against the bed for support. "You... are not an ordinary maid... you are... Nangong Shuang!"
Nangong Shuang's heart jolted; this man actually knew her true identity!
"Since you know who I am, you should be more forthcoming about who sent you," she stepped closer, her silver needle glinting ominously.
The intruder sneered coldly: "Do you really think... you can leave Guo Residence alive? Lord Guo has already received orders... to capture you tonight... and hand you over to Crown Prince's Mansion!"
"Crown Prince's Mansion?" Nangong Shuang's heart sank. "Are you saying Lord Guo is colluding with Crown Prince's Mansion against me?"
A flicker of surprise crossed the intruder's eyes: "You didn't know... Guo Yushi has always been one of the Crown Prince's henchmen... and Crown Prince's Mansion was one of those who destroyed your Nangong Family back then!"
Nangong Shuang felt as if struck by lightning! Lord Guo was actually one of her family's enemies! No wonder he had been testing her today and even feigned warning her to be cautious—he intended to lull her into complacency to set up tonight’s ambush!
"And what about the Plum Blossom Token?" Though poisoned, the intruder’s voice grew increasingly menacing. "Hand it over, and I can grant you a quick death!"
Nangong Shuang let out a cold laugh: "You want the Plum Blossom Token? You’ll have to get past me first!"
Saying this, she suddenly lifted the bed board and took out the half of the Plum Blossom Token from the hidden compartment, stuffing it into her bosom before swiftly leaping out of the window!
