"Trying to escape?" The man in black suddenly whistled sharply, and instantly, dozens of torches lit up the courtyard. Several guards surged from the shadows, surrounding the entire area!
Nangong Shuang quickly surveyed her surroundings after landing, realizing she was completely surrounded. Stepping forward was none other than the steward, Zhang Lu!
"Nangong Shuang, sneaking out at midnight, where do you think you're going?" Zhang Lu said with a sinister smile. "The master has ordered you to come to the hall for a discussion."
Nangong Shuang sensed that things were not looking good; tonight, Lord Guo was clearly planning to make his move against her! And her meeting with Xiao Zhongyan at midnight seemed impossible now.
Just as she found herself in a dilemma, a sudden sound of urgent hoofbeats echoed from afar, followed by an even greater commotion.
"An assassin has broken into Guo Residence!" came the shout from a distance. "Quickly protect the master!"
Zhang Lu's expression changed dramatically as he barked, "Forget about that! Capture this girl first!"
The guards rushed forward, but Nangong Shuang remained calm under pressure. She scattered a pouch of powder from her sleeve, instantly creating a cloud of smoke. Taking advantage of the guards' coughing fits, she leaped onto the roof and fled toward the estate's exit!
"Don't let her escape!" Zhang Lu shouted angrily, ordering his men to pursue her.
Nangong Shuang dashed across the rooftops, using her lightness skill to quickly shake off most of her pursuers. However, just as she jumped over a wall, a cold gleam shot through the air toward her!
She hurriedly dodged to the side but still felt a sharp pain as it grazed her arm. Upon landing, she found herself facing a masked figure in black, wielding a blue short sword—the very weapon that had injured her!
"Hand over the Plum Blossom Token, and I might spare your life," the black-clad figure said coldly, but surprisingly, it was a woman's voice!
Nangong Shuang was astonished to realize that this was an assassin with exceptional skills and ruthless intent—definitely not someone to be trifled with.
"Who are you? Why do you want the Plum Blossom Token?" Nangong Shuang asked warily while secretly scanning her surroundings for an escape route.
The assassin sneered. "Who I am is unimportant; what matters is that the Plum Blossom Token in your possession is something my master has sought for years. If you know what's good for you, hand it over willingly!"
With that, she struck again, her sword flashing like lightning as it aimed for Nangong Shuang's throat!
Nangong Shuang retreated repeatedly, barely avoiding a fatal blow but still sustaining a cut on her shoulder. She knew very well that with her current skills, she was no match for this assassin. Her only chance of survival lay in outsmarting her rather than confronting her directly!
"The Plum Blossom Token is right here; come and take it!" Nangong Shuang suddenly pulled an object from her bosom and threw it into the distance.
Seeing this, the assassin immediately chased after it. Taking advantage of this distraction, Nangong Shuang attempted to escape in another direction but was shocked when the assassin proved to be so alert—she caught the thrown object in mid-air and swiftly turned back to stab at Nangong Shuang's back!
In that critical moment, a white figure descended from above and blocked Nangong Shuang's path. With a clang, it deflected the deadly strike!
"It's you!" the assassin exclaimed in disbelief.
Nangong Shuang looked up and saw that it was Xiao Zhongyan in white who had come to her rescue!
"Go!" Xiao Zhongyan urged in a low voice as he grabbed Nangong Shuang's hand and dashed toward the estate's exit.
The Assassin relentlessly pursued, and Xiao Zhongyan turned around, striking back with his sword to force the opponent back. He then said to Nangong Shuang, "She is from the Shadow Pavilion and not easy to deal with. We should split up and meet at Guanyin Temple!"
With that, he suddenly changed direction, deliberately drawing the Assassin's attention. As expected, the Assassin chased after Xiao Zhongyan, giving Nangong Shuang the chance to slip away towards the west of the city.
Behind her, the Guo Residence was in chaos, flames soaring into the sky amidst the sounds of battle. Clearly, Xiao Zhongyan had created a disturbance to provide her with an opportunity to escape.
Nangong Shuang felt grateful in her heart and quickened her pace as she raced towards the outskirts of the city.
