“Medicine Garden?” Guan Chunyi asked, somewhat surprised. “There is indeed an old Medicine Garden at the foot of the back mountain, but it has been neglected for many years and is now overgrown. If you need medicinal herbs, why not just buy them from the apothecary?”
Nangong Shuang explained, “This prescription is quite special; it requires wild herbs that have grown naturally for many years. Most of what you find in apothecaries are cultivated and lack the potency of wild ones.”
Guan Chunyi understood at once. “I see. Then please feel free to pick from the old Medicine Garden. I will instruct my servants to guide you there.”
“No need to disturb anyone else,” Nangong Shuang quickly interjected. “I have trouble sleeping at night and would like to take a stroll under the moonlight to clear my mind. Could you tell me the exact location of the Medicine Garden?”
Though Guan Chunyi was a bit puzzled, she thought about how Nangong Shuang had agreed to help her send a message and decided not to ask further. She described the location of the Medicine Garden in detail: “From the plum grove heading west, there is a small path that leads directly to the back mountain. At the foot of the mountain, there is a bamboo forest; once you pass through it, you will see a Stone Arch. That is where the old Medicine Garden is located. However, it has been a long time since anyone visited, so be careful as it may be overgrown with weeds.”
Nangong Shuang noted down the route and chatted with Guan Chunyi for a few more moments before excusing herself under the pretense of needing to prepare medicine.
Once back in her room, Nangong Shuang immediately sketched out the route described by Guan Chunyi on a piece of paper and handed it to Xiao Cha, who had come to deliver tea. After reading it, Xiao Cha nodded in understanding and quietly informed Nangong Shuang that she had already arranged a route for their nighttime excursion to ensure they wouldn’t be discovered.
After their secret planning was complete, Xiao Cha left while Nangong Shuang began organizing her medicine box in preparation for their night mission.
As night fell, Guo Residence gradually quieted down. As midnight approached, Nangong Shuang donned her dark clothing and quietly left her room. Although there were many guards in the residence, Nangong Shuang had long since figured out their patrol patterns and easily avoided them, arriving at the designated plum grove.
Xiao Cha was already waiting there, also dressed in dark attire. Upon seeing Nangong Shuang, she quickly approached. “Sister, I’ve scouted ahead; there really is a path leading to the back mountain with few guards along the way—this is a perfect opportunity for us.”
Nangong Shuang nodded, and together they followed Guan Chunyi’s described route quietly westward. The moonlight poured down like water, illuminating their path through the forest.
After passing through the plum grove, they soon came upon a winding path leading upward. The two moved cautiously until they reached the foot of the back mountain. A tranquil bamboo forest lay before them, its leaves rustling softly as if whispering secrets.
“This is it,” Nangong Shuang whispered. “Once we pass through this bamboo forest, we’ll see the Medicine Garden.”
Just as they were about to step forward, they suddenly heard rustling sounds ahead—someone was moving through the bamboo!
“Someone’s here!” Xiao Cha said alertly as she grabbed hold of Nangong Shuang’s arm. The two quickly hid behind a large tree.
Before long, a slender figure emerged from the bamboo forest, appearing particularly clear under the moonlight. Nangong Shuang squinted and realized it was Xiao Cui!
“What is she doing here?” Xiao Cha asked in surprise.
Nangong Shuang frowned and gestured for Xiao Cha to remain silent while observing Xiao Cui’s movements closely.
Xiao Cui looked around cautiously; after confirming no one was watching, she pushed open a hidden small door within the bamboo grove and slipped inside. The door closed behind her, and once again silence enveloped the bamboo forest.
“There’s a door!” Xiao Cha exclaimed in astonishment. “Didn’t Miss Guo Chunyi say we needed to pass through the bamboo forest? How could there be a door?”
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before whispering, “Perhaps this is another route. The bamboo forest is so dense that traversing it on foot would indeed be inconvenient; having a door makes sense. But why does Xiao Cui know about this door? And coming here at night must mean she has ulterior motives.”
“Should we follow her to see what’s going on?” Xiao Cha asked eagerly.
After considering for a while, Nangong Shuang nodded and said, “That’s exactly what I intend to do. But we must be cautious not to alert anyone.”
