The two quietly approached the small door hidden within the bamboo grove. Although the door was closed, it was not locked. Nangong Shuang gently pushed it open a crack, revealing a stone path that stretched ahead.
Cautiously, they walked along the stone road and soon came upon a Stone Arch. The door was intricately carved with floral patterns; despite years of neglect, its former beauty was still evident. Beyond the archway lay a vast garden, lush with various plants under the moonlight, clearly not abandoned.
"Is this the Medicine Garden?" Xiao Cha whispered in surprise. "It doesn't look abandoned at all."
Nangong Shuang was also taken aback. Observing the Medicine Garden closely, she noted its meticulous layout and clear divisions, indicating it had been well-maintained. Various herbs were arranged by their properties, some even labeled with their names and effects.
"Someone is tending to this Medicine Garden," Nangong Shuang asserted. "And it's someone knowledgeable about medicine."
Just then, a faint sound came from ahead. The two quickly hid behind a row of tall bushes to observe.
In the moonlight, Xiao Cui was busy in front of a patch of herbs, skillfully gathering a certain medicinal plant with practiced ease, clearly experienced. After collecting the herbs, she took out a small notebook from her pocket and began recording something carefully before moving to another patch.
"Sister, what is she doing?" Xiao Cha asked in confusion.
Nangong Shuang's eyes glinted sharply. "She is collecting herbs, and according to some specific formula. Judging by her actions and the herbs she chooses, she must be preparing a complex medicine."
"What kind of medicine is so mysterious that she has to gather it in the dead of night?"
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before her eyes lit up. "Wait a minute, the combination of these herbs... could she be preparing Qi Xin Xiang?"
"Qi Xin Xiang?" Xiao Cha was puzzled. "Is that the one you used against Zhang Lu?"
Nangong Shuang nodded. "Exactly. But what surprises me even more is that her selection and combination of herbs are identical to those of the Nangong Family's formula. How could she know this recipe?"
This discovery set off alarm bells in Nangong Shuang's mind. The Nangong Family's Qi Xin Xiang formula was a family secret; outsiders could not possibly know it. If Xiao Cui could gather herbs according to this formula, she must have significant ties to the Nangong Family.
"Should we stop her?" Xiao Cha asked eagerly.
Nangong Shuang shook her head. "Not yet. Let's see what else she does first. Besides, our purpose here is to find medicine; if we reveal ourselves too soon, we might scare her away."
The two continued to hide and observe as Xiao Cui finished gathering her herbs and carefully placed them in her pocket before heading deeper into the Medicine Garden. Nangong Shuang and Xiao Cha stealthily followed at a safe distance.
Deeper within the Medicine Garden stood a small bamboo pavilion, into which Xiao Cui walked directly. She took out a stone mortar and pestle from the pavilion and began grinding the herbs. Her movements were skilled and precise, her gaze focused as she immersed herself in the world of concocting medicine.
"This technique..." Nangong Shuang watched in fascination, murmuring, "is exactly like my family's tradition."
The Nangong Family's method for preparing Qi Xin Xiang involved specific steps and techniques; every detail was crucial. Each of Xiao Cui's movements, every bit of force she applied, even the order in which she ground the herbs were completely consistent with what had been passed down in the Nangong Family. This was no coincidence; someone must have taught her.
"Sister, look at her waist!" Xiao Cha suddenly exclaimed in a low voice.
Nangong Shuang focused her gaze and saw that as Xiao Cui bent over to grind the herbs, her belt loosened slightly, revealing an exquisite jade pendant. In the moonlight, the pattern on the pendant became clear—an orchid bud ready to bloom!
"The Orchid Jade Pendant of the Xiao Family!" Nangong Shuang's heart raced with shock. "She really is connected to the Xiao Family!"
