Stepping out of the study, Nangong Shuang let out a long breath, her mind swirling with thoughts. Lord Guo was clearly testing her and knew more than she had imagined. Today's banquet would likely be a contest rife with undercurrents.
Back in her room, Xiao Cha approached with concern, asking, "Sister, what did Lord Guo say?"
Nangong Shuang briefly recounted their conversation. After listening, Xiao Cha's expression turned serious. "It seems Lord Guo indeed has suspicions about your identity. You must be cautious at today's banquet."
"I am aware," Nangong Shuang replied calmly. "Let’s go see how Guan Chunyi is preparing. I must not forget to deliver her love letter."
Xiao Cha smiled knowingly and followed Nangong Shuang to Guan Chunyi's chamber. Guan Chunyi had already dressed elegantly in a light pink satin gown that complemented her snow-like skin and peach blossom-like face. Upon seeing Nangong Shuang, she joyfully rushed forward, grasping her hand and whispering, "Sister, did you bring the letter?"
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly and took out the note that Guan Chunyi had entrusted to her the previous day. "I have it. Rest assured, I will personally deliver it to Xiao Gongzi."
Guan Chunyi nodded gratefully and cautioned, "Sister, please be careful when delivering the message. If there are others around, wait for the right moment."
"Do not worry, Miss. I know how to handle it," Nangong Shuang reassured her, though her heart was filled with mixed emotions.
Before long, the banquet began, and guests arrived one after another. As Guan Chunyi's companion, Nangong Shuang naturally stayed close by her side. Xiao Cha transformed into an ordinary maid, weaving through the guests while discreetly observing their movements.
Inside the banquet hall, cups clinked and guests mingled like clouds. Lord Guo and Madam Guo stood at the entrance welcoming attendees while Guan Chunyi accompanied them. Nangong Shuang stood half a step behind Guan Chunyi, appearing as a proper young lady's attendant while secretly observing each guest.
"Lord Xiao has arrived!" a servant announced loudly at the door.
Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat as she instinctively straightened her back. She saw Xiao Xiang entering with his wife, followed by two young gentlemen—Xiao Zhongyan and Xiao Zhongmo.
Xiao Zhongyan wore white robes, exuding elegance and grace; Xiao Zhongmo donned a dark blue brocade robe, radiating vigor and confidence. Though both were of the same father, their temperaments were strikingly different.
Lord Guo warmly approached them for greetings while Xiao Zhongyan and Xiao Zhongmo stepped forward to pay their respects. Their gazes, however, unconsciously fell upon Nangong Shuang standing behind Guan Chunyi.
Nangong Shuang kept her head down and remained composed but could feel the intensity of their stares. Xiao Zhongyan's eyes seemed to carry concern while Xiao Zhongmo's gaze was sharp as a knife, as if trying to see through her disguise.
"Miss Guo has grown even more graceful," Xiao Zhongyan said as he stepped forward to bow politely.
Guan Chunyi's face flushed instantly as she slightly curtsied in return. "Thank you for your kind words, Xiao Gongzi."
Xiao Zhongmo was not to be outdone; he stepped up and remarked, "Miss Guo looks like a water lily today—truly delightful."
Guan Chunyi thanked him politely but lacked the vibrancy she displayed when addressing Xiao Zhongyan. After some small talk, Guan Chunyi quietly suggested to Nangong Shuang, "Sister, let’s take a walk in the garden."
Understanding her intention, Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement. Just as they were about to leave, Xiao Zhongyan suddenly spoke up: "Miss Guo, your father mentioned that a talented young lady skilled in medicine has recently joined your household; might you introduce her?"
Guan Chunyi responded eagerly, "That would be Sister Shuang here! She is highly skilled in medicine and even saved my life not long ago."
Nangong Shuang performed a respectful bow with a calm voice: "I have met you before, Xiao Gongzi. I am merely somewhat knowledgeable in medicine; it is nothing remarkable."
Xiao Zhongyan smiled slightly. "You are too modest. I have heard that not only are you skilled in medicine but also knowledgeable about toxicology—such talents are indeed rare."
