Nangong Shuang made a shushing gesture, quietly moving to the door, ready to face any potential danger. The footsteps grew closer, finally stopping outside the door. Then, a note slipped through the crack.
Xiao Cha quickly picked up the note and handed it to Nangong Shuang. As she unfolded it, she saw only a few simple words: “Mei Xin Pavilion is at the deepest part of the Medicine Garden; the Plum Blossom Token is the key to open it. Nangong Family's medical skills, Heavenly Fragrance everlasting.”
The note was signed with a single character: "Xiao."
Nangong Shuang's heart raced; this was clearly left by Xiao Zhongyan. He not only knew the location of Mei Xin Pavilion but also hinted that the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique was hidden there! Moreover, he had once again confirmed her identity as a member of the Nangong Family without exposing her, instead choosing to assist her in secret.
“Sister, who left this?” Xiao Cha asked curiously.
Nangong Shuang's expression was complex as she replied softly, “It’s from Xiao Zhongyan. He’s telling us where to find the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.”
“Xiao Da Gongzi?” Xiao Cha exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise. “Why would he help us?”
Nangong Shuang shook her head, confusion filling her eyes. “I don’t know. The relationship between the Xiao Family and the Nangong Family is far more complicated than I imagined. It’s hard to judge Xiao Zhongyan’s stance.”
With a soft sigh, she destroyed the note and fell into deep thought. Today’s events were both a crisis and an opportunity. Xiao Cui's identity had been exposed, and Xiao Zhongmo's plan had failed; her situation at Guo Residence had become safer as a result. At the same time, she had confirmed the location of the Nangong Family's Medicine Garden and gained clues about Mei Xin Pavilion, bringing her one step closer to finding the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.
“Sister, why do you think Xiao Da Gongzi is helping us?” Xiao Cha asked with curiosity. “Could it be because... he has feelings for you?”
Nangong Shuang felt her cheeks flush and quickly shook her head. “What nonsense! He and Guan Chunyi are in love; how could he have feelings for me?”
“That’s not necessarily true,” Xiao Cha said with a sly smile. “I saw with my own eyes how Xiao Da Gongzi looked at you several times during the banquet, filled with concern. And after he accepted Guan Chunyi's love letter, his expression was complicated; he didn’t seem that happy.”
Nangong Shuang felt a stir in her heart but quickly suppressed it. “Regardless, I’m here to uncover the truth behind the annihilation of the Nangong Family and seek revenge for my family. Romantic feelings are not something I can consider.”
Xiao Cha said no more but cast a meaningful glance at Nangong Shuang, silently sighing: Sister, even you might not be aware of your own feelings.
The room returned to silence as Nangong Shuang stood by the window, gazing at the bright moon in the night sky, lost in thought. The enmity of the Nangong Family must be avenged; she must find the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique; and that man who troubled her heart—was he friend or foe? Time would tell.
The moonlight poured down like water onto her resolute face, as if guiding her forward.
Morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting dappled shadows on the stone path of Guo Residence. Servants bustled about, busy preparing the courtyard with red lanterns and pasting up auspicious characters, creating a festive atmosphere. Today marked Guo Chunyi's sixteenth birthday; Lord Guo was rarely in town and had specifically ordered a grand banquet to celebrate with the city's elite.
“Sister! Sister, come look!” Guan Chunyi rushed into Nangong Shuang's room, holding an invitation in her hand. “Today is my birthday! Father has allowed us to go out shopping and pick out our favorite things!”
Nangong Shuang was organizing her medicine box when she heard this and looked up with a smile. “Happy birthday, Miss! It’s good to go out for a walk; I need some medicinal herbs anyway since our medicine box is nearly empty.”
Guan Chunyi pouted slightly in dissatisfaction. “Oh come on! Today is for having fun; why are you still thinking about buying medicine?” She grabbed Nangong Shuang's hand excitedly. “Let’s go to Jinxiu Workshop in the south of town! They’ve just received many exquisite jewelry and spices from the Western Regions!”
