"Miss, you have a keen eye." Nangong Shuang picked up a small pouch of spices and sniffed it carefully. "This is 'Xing Shen Xiang,' known for its invigorating effects. If you feel fatigued from studying, burning some will refresh your mind."
"Sister, you know so much!" Guan Chunyi exclaimed. "Then let's buy some to take home!"
The two spent most of the day at Jinxiu Workshop, purchasing various spices, jewelry, and fabrics. Noticing Nangong Shuang's expertise with the spices, Guan Chunyi specifically asked her to select a few for further study.
As the sun climbed higher in the sky, Guan Chunyi suggested they find a teahouse for a meal before returning home to prepare for the evening banquet. They arrived at a nearby restaurant named "Ting Yu Lou" and requested a private room on the second floor by the window.
"Sister, you must try the Plum Cake here; it's a specialty of the capital!" Guan Chunyi enthusiastically served Nangong Shuang, completely shedding any pretense of being a refined young lady.
Nangong Shuang chuckled lightly as she enjoyed tea and food with Guan Chunyi. Outside the window, the bustling street was alive with activity. Just as they were eating, Nangong Shuang's gaze suddenly sharpened—down in the alley below, several suspicious-looking men were dragging a young woman toward a secluded area. The girl struggled desperately but was muffled and unable to scream.
"Miss, please continue; I’ll be right back," Nangong Shuang said as she set down her chopsticks and quickly stood up.
Guan Chunyi looked puzzled. "Sister, where are you going?"
"I saw something amiss; I need to check it out," Nangong Shuang explained briefly before whispering to a servant accompanying them, "Keep an eye on the young lady; don’t let her leave the room."
The servant nodded in agreement, and Nangong Shuang hurried downstairs, following the alleyway. The men had already dragged the girl into a deeper part of the alley, so she quickened her pace and followed stealthily.
After turning several corners, she spotted a carriage ahead where the men were about to push the girl inside. With quick reflexes, Nangong Shuang took out a pouch of powder from her sleeve and swiftly scattered it into the air while they were distracted.
"Who goes there?!" The leader of the men noticed something was off and turned around angrily.
Nangong Shuang stood at the mouth of the alley and coldly commanded, "Let that girl go!"
The men exchanged glances, and one of them sneered, "Little miss, mind your own business! Don’t meddle where you don’t belong!"
"Human trafficking is a serious crime," Nangong Shuang replied unfazed. "Release her, and I’ll spare your lives!"
"What audacity!" The leader laughed maliciously as he drew a short knife and approached Nangong Shuang. "Little miss, you seem like quite a catch yourself; we’ll take you too!"
Nangong Shuang smiled slightly and calmly said, "'Dinghun San' is about to take effect."
"What?" The man paused for a moment before feeling dizzy and unsteady on his feet. "You... you poisoned us?"
The powder she had scattered was indeed 'Dinghun San,' a secret formula passed down in the Nangong Family that caused confusion and weakness in those who inhaled it. Within moments, the men began to sway unsteadily before collapsing to the ground in groans.
Seeing this, the abducted girl quickly broke free from her restraints and ran to Nangong Shuang's side, gratefully bowing. "Thank you for saving my life!"
Nangong Shuang then noticed that this was a girl of about fifteen or sixteen years old, dressed in simple yet elegant attire. Although her clothes were somewhat disheveled from her ordeal, her extraordinary demeanor could not be concealed. Her skin was like cream, her features exquisite; her bright almond-shaped eyes radiated intelligence and resilience—clearly not an ordinary girl.
"Are you alright?" Nangong Shuang asked with concern while taking out silver needles from her sleeve, keeping a wary eye on the fallen traffickers.
"Thanks to you, I am safe now; otherwise, it would have been unimaginable," the girl wiped away tears of shock and joy. "Your medical skills are remarkable! This 'Dinghun San' formula is exquisite; it must be a family secret!"
Nangong Shuang's heart trembled. "How does the young lady know it is 'Dinghun San'?"
