Nangong Shuang remained noncommittal as they continued their journey, soon returning to the Guo Residence. The estate was already adorned with lanterns and festive decorations, and the servants were busy preparing the banquet hall, creating a lively atmosphere.
Upon entering her room, Xiao Cha hurried over, handing Nangong Shuang a note with a mysterious air. "Sister, someone just delivered this."
Nangong Shuang unfolded it and read, "Meet in the back garden at midnight; there is an important matter to discuss." It was signed simply with the character "Xiao."
"That's Xiao Zhongyan's handwriting," Nangong Shuang murmured, her heart stirring. Ever since he had helped her at the last banquet and provided clues about Mei Xin Pavilion, they had not been in contact. His sudden invitation today must signify something significant.
"Are you going, sister?" Xiao Cha asked anxiously. "Could this be a trap?"
Nangong Shuang pondered for a moment before shaking her head. "If Xiao Zhongyan wanted to harm me, he wouldn't go through all this trouble. Since he has secretly aided me, he must have his reasons. We will go together tonight at midnight, just in case."
Xiao Cha nodded in agreement and then whispered, "I heard that the Xiao Family will indeed attend tonight's banquet, but it will only be Madam Xiao and Xiao Er Gongzi. Lord Xiao and Xiao Da Gongzi couldn't make it due to official duties."
Nangong Shuang frowned slightly. "Xiao Zhongmo is coming too? He left last time in disgrace; I didn't expect him to show his face so soon."
"I heard that Madam Xiao personally brought him here to apologize," Xiao Cha explained. "After all, the last incident was indeed the Xiao Family's fault."
Nangong Shuang fell silent, her mind racing with thoughts. The movements of the Xiao Family were enigmatic; Xiao Zhongyan was secretly assisting her while Xiao Zhongmo was openly opposing her. Each family member had their own stance, making it difficult to discern their true intentions.
"By the way, sister," Xiao Cha suddenly recalled something. "I found something strange in the back garden just now."
She took out a silk handkerchief and opened it to reveal an exquisite jade pendant carved with a slender Azure Dragon, lifelike in its detail.
"This is..." Nangong Shuang picked up the pendant and examined it closely. "Azure Dragon Jade Pendant? Where did you find this?"
Xiao Cha replied, "It was under the plum tree in the back garden; it seems someone deliberately placed it there."
A flicker of caution crossed Nangong Shuang's eyes. "Could this be related to Lan Yuyan, whom we saved today?"
"Lan Yuyan?" Xiao Cha looked puzzled. "Who is she?"
Nangong Shuang briefly explained how they had rescued her earlier and added, "Lan Yuyan knows about Dinghun San and its effects; she clearly has some connection to the Nangong Family. She will be attending the banquet tonight, and I can't shake off the feeling that things are not as simple as they seem."
Just then, a servant announced that Miss Guo Chunyi requested Nangong Shuang's assistance with her makeup. Nangong Shuang tucked away the jade pendant and instructed Xiao Cha to keep an eye on Lan Yuyan's every move that evening before heading to Guan Chunyi's chamber.
As night fell, Guo Residence was ablaze with lights and filled with guests arriving one after another. Nangong Shuang accompanied Guan Chunyi at the entrance to greet them while keeping an eye out for Lan Yuyan's arrival.
"Madam Xiao has arrived!" a servant called out loudly.
Nangong Shuang saw Madam Xiao gracefully making her way through the crowd, followed closely by Xiao Zhongmo. Madam Xiao exuded elegance and poise as she greeted Lord Guo and Madam Guo with ease. In contrast, Xiao Zhongmo wore a respectful expression and made no mention of their previous encounter, as if nothing had ever happened.
"Guan Chunyi is even more enchanting than when I last saw her," Xiao Zhongmo said as he approached to bow politely, showing no hint of animosity towards Nangong Shuang.
Guan Chunyi returned the greeting politely, but her eyes revealed a hint of indifference. Ever since she learned that Xiao Zhongmo had sent someone to monitor Nangong Shuang, her impression of this Young Master Xiao had significantly diminished.
