"It’s nothing, just thinking about your mother’s condition," Nangong Shuang replied calmly.
Xiao Zhongyan looked at her meaningfully. "Miss, your medical skills are remarkable; I believe you can cure my mother’s ailment. If you succeed, I would be immensely grateful."
Nangong Shuang nodded coldly. "I will certainly do my best."
"Do you seem to have some prejudice against me?" Xiao Zhongyan asked softly, a hint of confusion in his voice. "May I ask why?"
Nangong Shuang sneered inwardly: The Xiao family participated in the annihilation of the Nangong family, and now they pretend to be innocent? However, on the surface, she merely replied, "Xiao Gongzi is overestimating me. It is merely my nature; it does not stem from any dissatisfaction with you."
Xiao Zhongyan seemed to want to say more, but at that moment, a servant hurried over and whispered something in his ear. His expression changed slightly before he quickly regained his composure and smiled apologetically at Nangong Shuang. "I apologize; there are some matters I need to attend to. I will discuss this further with you later."
With that, he hurried away, leaving Nangong Shuang to ponder alone. She vaguely sensed that the news the servant brought was not good. Could there be some trouble at the Xiao Mansion?
While she was deep in thought, Guan Chunyi ran over excitedly. "Sister, you are amazing! Even Xiao Da Gongzi speaks highly of you! I think he has quite a fondness for you!"
Nangong Shuang smiled indifferently. "You flatter me, Miss. Xiao Gongzi is highly knowledgeable; he is merely being polite."
Guan Chunyi winked mischievously. "I don’t think so! The way Xiao Gongzi looks at you is quite special!"
Nangong Shuang felt a slight stir in her heart but quickly calmed herself down. No matter what Xiao Zhongyan thought of her, she could not forget her mission—to avenge the Nangong family. Romantic feelings were not something she could afford to consider.
Just then, a commotion erupted in one corner of the banquet hall. Everyone turned to see a middle-aged man suddenly clutching his chest, his face turning purple as he collapsed from his seat!
"Help! Someone has fainted!"
A cry rang out as guests stood up and gathered around to discuss what was happening. The man's complexion grew increasingly purple, his lips blackening and eyes wide open; it looked like a dire situation!
"Quickly fetch the doctor!" Xiao Xiang urgently instructed.
Nangong Shuang carefully observed the man's symptoms and had already formed a judgment in her mind: this was a sign of poisoning! Moreover, the poison was potent; if not treated promptly, his life would be in jeopardy!
"Sister Shuang, is that man in danger?" Guan Chunyi asked worriedly.
Just as Nangong Shuang was about to respond, Xiao Zhongmo's voice suddenly interjected: "What can a mere village doctor understand? Let’s wait for the imperial physician!"
The crowd began to murmur; some believed they should wait for the imperial physician while others suggested immediate action. Opinions varied widely.
Nangong Shuang glanced at the man's condition and estimated that he would be in mortal danger within another minute or so. She no longer hesitated and quickly stood up to approach the man.
"Nangong Shuang, what are you going to do?" Xiao Zhongmo blocked her path, his eyes flashing with suspicion.
Nangong Shuang replied coldly, "This man has been severely poisoned; if we delay any longer, his life will be at risk. Please let me pass, Xiao Er Gongzi!"
"Nonsense! This is clearly a heart attack; how could it be poisoning?" Xiao Zhongmo scoffed. "You’re just a minor female doctor; how dare you speak so boldly in my Xiao Mansion?"
Seeing the man's condition becoming increasingly critical, Nangong Shuang stopped entangling with Xiao Zhongmo and directly bypassed him to reach the man's side. She swiftly took out a silver needle from her sleeve and aimed it at the man's philtrum!
"You dare!" Xiao Zhongmo shouted in anger, trying to step forward to stop her.
At that critical moment, Xiao Xiang suddenly spoke up, "Wait! Let Nangong Shuang give it a try!"
Everyone was taken aback, not expecting Xiao Xiang to support Nangong Shuang. Xiao Zhongmo felt unwilling but dared not defy his father's command, so he could only retreat reluctantly.
