Lu Shilang gestured for Nangong Shuang to come closer and whispered, "Miss, your medical skills are remarkable and resemble those of the Nangong Family. I have a question that I hope you won't mind me asking."
Nangong Shuang felt a jolt of surprise but maintained her composure. "Lord Lu, please feel free to ask."
Lu Shilang glanced around to ensure no one was eavesdropping before lowering his voice further. "Have you ever heard of a medical book called 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique'?"
Nangong Shuang's heart raced! The 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique' was the treasure of the Nangong Family, containing numerous miraculous medical techniques, including the method to dispel the Cold Poison within her. This book had always been kept secret, and for Lu Shilang to know about it was astonishing!
"'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique'?" Nangong Shuang feigned deep thought. "I believe I've seen it mentioned in a medical book; it's a long-lost text, isn't it?"
Lu Shilang smiled knowingly. "It's more than just a medical book. This text conceals a shocking secret that pertains to the current state of affairs in our court. The reason the Nangong Family was exterminated was because of this book."
Madam Xiao gasped in surprise. "Lord Lu, is that true? I always thought the Nangong Family was executed for treason."
Lu Shilang shook his head. "The notion of treason is merely a cover-up. The truth is far more complicated." He turned his gaze to Nangong Shuang, his eyes glinting with an inscrutable light. "Your medical skills are exceptional; if you could find this book, you would surely reach new heights."
Nangong Shuang's internal alarm bells rang: Was Lu Shilang probing her identity with his words?
"Lord Lu, you flatter me," she replied cautiously. "I am merely a physician; how could I have the ability to seek out such a long-lost treasure?"
Lu Shilang did not press further but said meaningfully, "Those destined to meet will eventually cross paths. If you happen to encounter this book in the future, it will undoubtedly unravel many mysteries."
Madam Xiao listened in confusion but refrained from asking more questions. She glanced outside at the darkening sky and said, "It’s getting late, Lord Lu needs rest; we should take our leave."
Nangong Shuang stood up to bid farewell, her mind racing with thoughts. Lu Shilang's words were laden with implications; he seemed to know many secrets about the Nangong Family and had a keen interest in the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.' What connection did he have with the Nangong Family? What was this "shocking secret" he spoke of?
As she stepped out of the room, Nangong Shuang suddenly recalled something and turned to Madam Xiao. "Madam, while I was checking Lord Lu's pulse earlier, I noticed that there are still toxins remaining in his body. Perhaps I should prepare another prescription to help him expel these toxins?"
Madam Xiao readily agreed. "You are very considerate; I will have someone prepare the herbs right away."
After thanking Madam Xiao, Nangong Shuang returned alone to Lu Shilang's room under the pretense of gathering herbs. She looked around to confirm no one was watching before quickly checking under Lu Shilang's pillow. The brown powder remained there; she carefully collected some and hid it in her sleeve.
Just as she was about to leave, her attention was drawn to a bundle belonging to Lu Shilang. A corner of yellow fabric peeked out from it, seemingly embroidered with some pattern. Instinctively, Nangong Shuang gently moved aside the bundle to reveal the yellow cloth.
She gasped: it was a small flag adorned with a unique plum blossom pattern belonging to the Nangong Family! This flag was clearly a symbol of the Nangong Family's guard!
"How could Lu Shilang possess something from the Nangong Family?" Nangong Shuang thought in shock. "Could he truly have ties to them?"
She quickly restored the flag and tidied up the bundle before leaving the room without leaving a trace.
Back in the banquet hall, guests were beginning to take their leave. Nangong Shuang found Guan Chunyi and informed her that she would be preparing medicine for Lu Shilang and might return home later.
"Sister, you're too tired; let me accompany you," Guan Chunyi said with concern.
Nangong Shuang shook her head. "There's no need for that. You and Lord Guo and Madam Guo should return and rest first. I'll finish preparing the medicine and come back quickly."
