Although worried, Guan Chunyi understood Nangong Shuang's sense of responsibility as a healer and could only nod in agreement, leaving with the Guo family.
Nangong Shuang watched them depart and then began preparing antidotes in the Xiao Mansion's pharmacy. She deliberately slowed her pace, hoping to wait until the house quieted down to continue her investigation.
As she was mixing the medicine, a faint sound of footsteps suddenly came from outside the door. Nangong Shuang looked up alertly and saw Madam Xiao walking in slowly.
"Why has Madam come here?" Nangong Shuang asked, somewhat surprised.
Madam Xiao smiled and said, "I saw you working hard on the medicine and came to see if you needed any help."
Nangong Shuang expressed her gratitude, "Thank you for your kindness, Madam. I have all the herbs prepared and will finish soon."
Madam Xiao nodded and approached Nangong Shuang, watching her skillfully weigh and grind the herbs. "Your technique is quite proficient; it’s clear you’ve been practicing medicine since childhood," Madam Xiao remarked with admiration. "I wonder who your master is, to have taught you such remarkable skills."
Nangong Shuang humbly replied, "My master lives in seclusion in the mountains but possesses profound medical knowledge. I have only learned a fraction of it by following him since I was young."
Madam Xiao smiled slightly and suddenly asked, "Do you know why the Nangong family was exterminated back then?"
Nangong Shuang's heart jolted, her movements momentarily pausing before she quickly regained her composure. "I have only heard rumors about the Nangong family's rebellion; I do not know the specifics."
"Rebellion?" Madam Xiao shook her head, a hint of sadness flashing in her eyes. "That was merely a pretext used by the court. The Nangong family has been loyal for generations; how could they rebel?"
She sighed and continued, "Ten years ago, that massacre took so many innocent lives! Lord Nangong and his wife were kind-hearted people, and their daughter was so innocent and lovely. Even now, I still feel uneasy when I think about it."
Nangong Shuang was greatly shocked: Madam Xiao actually knew members of the Nangong family? Her tone was filled with nostalgia and regret, indicating a deep connection to them!
"Do you know them well?" Nangong Shuang asked cautiously.
Madam Xiao nodded. "Lady Nangong was my close friend. Her daughter is about the same age as my Xiao Zhongyan, and our families often interacted. Who would have thought..." Her voice choked up, "Who would have thought that in just one night, the Nangong family would be gone..."
Nangong Shuang's hands trembled slightly: Madam Xiao was actually her mother’s close friend? This information was too shocking! She had always thought of the Xiao family as enemies but never realized that Madam Xiao was friends with her mother!
"Then... do you know what really happened during that massacre?" Nangong Shuang controlled her voice to keep her emotions in check.
Madam Xiao shook her head. "All I know is that a large group of men in black suddenly stormed into Nangong Mansion that night, killing and setting fires. By morning, the Nangong family had become ruins. The authorities claimed they were rebelling, but those who knew better did not believe it."

Nangong Shuang felt a mix of emotions swirling within her. Her mother’s friend stood before her now, yet she could not reveal her identity. The injustice faced by the Nangong family might soon be rectified, but they had already lost so much.
Suddenly, Madam Xiao reached out to gently touch Nangong Shuang's cheek, filled with compassion: "You are so young yet possess such remarkable skills; you must have endured many hardships. Life is not easy; be kind to yourself."
Nangong Shuang felt warmth surge within her; tears nearly brimmed in her eyes. In that moment, she felt a long-lost maternal warmth that made her want to pour out her heart. But reason told her that she could not reveal her identity now; doing so would not only endanger herself but also implicate Madam Xiao.
