The two hurriedly made their way to the outer courtyard when suddenly a furious roar echoed through the air: “Absurd! Absolutely absurd! My Xiao Family has its own rules; how dare outsiders interfere? Where is that physician? Bring her to me!”
Xiao Zhongyan's expression changed dramatically as he whispered to Nangong Shuang, “It’s my father. He has discovered that you are treating my mother.”
Nangong Shuang felt a chill run down her spine. Xiao Xiang clearly harbored hostility towards the Nangong Family, and now that he knew she was in the residence, he would likely not let it go easily.
“We shouldn’t stay here any longer; let’s leave through the side door.” Xiao Zhongyan decisively took Nangong Shuang’s hand and quickly led her down a secluded corridor.
At that moment, a figure suddenly appeared around the corner—it was Xiao Zhongmo. He sneered, “Elder brother, where are you taking this ‘Nangong Shuang’? Father is looking for her.”
Xiao Zhongyan's face darkened. “Zhongmo, what are you doing here?”
Xiao Zhongmo scoffed disdainfully. “Father sent me to find someone; of course, I have to fulfill my duty.” He scrutinized Nangong Shuang from head to toe, his eyes glinting with a dangerous light. “Miss, your medical skills are impressive; you can identify Purple Butterfly Poison, treat stubborn ailments, and are well-versed in the Nangong Family's Needle Technique... who exactly are you?”
Nangong Shuang remained calm. “I am merely a female physician from Guo Residence, honored by the lady of the house to come and provide treatment. If I have offended in any way, I hope for your understanding.”
“Offended?” Xiao Zhongmo laughed coldly. “Do you know that ten years ago, the entire Nangong Family was exterminated, with only one girl missing? Now you suddenly appear, your medical skills mirroring those of the Nangong Family, and you even carry their mark—could this be mere coincidence?”
Nangong Shuang's heart sank: Xiao Zhongmo had already discovered her identity! The situation was critical; she needed to find a way to escape.
Xiao Zhongyan stepped in front of Nangong Shuang protectively. “Zhongmo, don’t speak nonsense. Nangong Shuang is from Guo Residence and has nothing to do with the Nangong Family.”
“Is that so?” Xiao Zhongmo replied with a sinister smile. “Then why does her Medicine Pouch contain this?” He pulled out a small cloth bag from his bosom and opened it to reveal a plum blossom-shaped jade pendant. “This is the Nangong Family's Token; I found it in her Medicine Pouch last night!”
Nangong Shuang was taken aback: that pendant had been hidden in the secret pocket of her Medicine Pouch! She hadn’t expected it to be stolen by Xiao Zhongmo last night!
“This... this is...” Xiao Zhongyan looked at Nangong Shuang, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
Nangong Shuang knew that there was no point in hiding any longer; just as she was about to speak, a familiar voice came from behind them: “Zhongmo, enough!”
The three turned around to see Madam Xiao approaching with a stern expression.
“Mother, you shouldn’t be out here,” Xiao Zhongyan quickly stepped forward to support her.
Madam Xiao waved her hand dismissively. “I’m feeling much better now, thanks to Nangong Shuang’s medical skills.” She turned to Xiao Zhongmo with a serious tone. “You’ve already wronged by taking something from Nangong Shuang; now you’re here spreading rumors—what kind of behavior is this?”
Xiao Zhongmo refused to back down. “Mother, you’ve been deceived! This woman could very well be a remnant of the Nangong Family! Father is looking for her!”
“Enough!” Madam Xiao exclaimed sharply. “The Nangong Family has deep ties with us; even if she truly is from the Nangong Family, what crime has she committed? The case against the Nangong Family is filled with doubts; the court is preparing for a retrial—how dare you slander her here!”
Xiao Zhongmo was left speechless by her reprimand, but his eyes still glimmered with malice.
Madam Xiao turned back to Nangong Shuang and said kindly, “Don’t be afraid; I will handle this. You should leave through the back door with Xiao Zhongyan.” She then took out a small bundle from her sleeve and handed it to Nangong Shuang. “These are some old items I found; they might be useful to you.”
Nangong Shuang accepted the bundle gratefully and bowed slightly. “Thank you, Madam.”
Xiao Zhongyan immediately led Nangong Shuang toward the backyard, leaving Madam Xiao to continue scolding Xiao Zhongmo.
