Nangong Shuang carefully stored the key and returned with Xiao Zhongyan along the same path. When they reached the entrance of the secret passage, they paused to listen for any sounds outside.
"It seems like no one is around," Xiao Zhongyan whispered. "I'll go out and take a look."
He cautiously pushed open the secret door and peeked outside. It was indeed quiet; the searchers had likely left.
"It's safe now; we can go out," Xiao Zhongyan sighed in relief.
As soon as they stepped out of the secret passage, the bookshelf silently slid back into place, restoring everything to its original state as if it had never been opened.
"That's incredible..." Nangong Shuang glanced back at the bookshelf, her heart filled with awe.
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "It seems that our ancestors' relationship with the Nangong Family is far more complicated than I imagined. This secret chamber was specifically prepared for the Nangong Family; there must be a deeper meaning behind it."
Nangong Shuang pondered this; the relationship between the Xiao Family and the Nangong Family had far exceeded her understanding. Her father's letter mentioned that "not all members of the Xiao Family are enemies," and it seemed to be true.
"I'll escort you back to Guo Residence," Xiao Zhongyan suggested. "The Xiao Mansion may not be safe for a while; it's best if you don't come back for now."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement and followed Xiao Zhongyan out through the side door of the library. They avoided the main roads and made their way to the back entrance of Xiao Mansion.
"Nangong Shuang," just before parting, Xiao Zhongyan suddenly spoke up, "the plum blossoms in Mei Garden are in full bloom tonight. Would you care to admire them? I have something important to tell you about new discoveries regarding the Nangong Family Case."
Nangong Shuang thought for a moment and nodded in agreement. "Alright, I'll come at midnight."
Xiao Zhongyan smiled with relief. "Then it's settled. I'll arrange for someone to meet you at the back door."
After bidding farewell to Xiao Zhongyan, Nangong Shuang returned alone to Guo Residence. Along the way, her mind was racing: today's gains far exceeded her expectations. Not only had she found the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique and learned how to eliminate Cold Poison from her body, but she also discovered Madam Xiao's deep friendship with her mother and Xiao Zhongyan's friendly attitude towards the Nangong Family.
What surprised her most was that she had found a secret letter left by her father and a key to the secret chamber of the Nangong Family ancestral home in Xiao Mansion! All of this hinted that the truth behind the Nangong Family Massacre Case was far more complex than she had imagined.
Upon returning to Guo Residence, Qiao Er had been waiting anxiously in their room. When she saw Nangong Shuang return, she rushed over. "Miss, I was so worried about you! Are you alright?"
Nangong Shuang shook her head and briefly recounted her experiences at Xiao Mansion to Qiao Er, omitting some crucial details.
Qiao Er was astonished after hearing this. "I can't believe Madam Xiao was your mother's close friend! That's truly unexpected!"
Nangong Shuang nodded. "Things are much more complicated than we thought. It seems there are factions within Xiao Mansion as well; Xiao Xiang and Xiao Zhongmo harbor hostility towards the Nangong Family, while Madam Xiao and Xiao Zhongyan are friendly."
Qiao Er frowned. "The waters of the Xiao Family run deep. By the way, Miss, I made a discovery today as well."
Nangong Shuang became intrigued. "What did you find?"
Qiao Er mysteriously pulled out a letter from her bosom. "I found this in Lord Guo's study. It's a secret letter from the Crown Prince addressed to Lord Guo, mentioning a re-examination of the Nangong Family Case!"
Nangong Shuang quickly took the letter and read it carefully. In it, the Crown Prince clearly stated that there were many doubts surrounding the rebellion case of the Nangong Family and had ordered an investigation for new evidence, hoping that Lord Guo could provide relevant documents from that time.
"Is the Crown Prince really going to reopen the Nangong Family Case?" Nangong Shuang exclaimed, filled with excitement. "This is incredible news!"
Qiao Er nodded. "Moreover, the letter mentioned that Lu Shilang is a key witness in this case because he holds some important evidence from that year."
Nangong Shuang suddenly understood. "No wonder Lu Shilang was poisoned at Xiao Mansion and someone broke into his home to search for items! Someone must be trying to silence him and destroy the evidence!"
