"Have you thought this through? Are you really going to marry that poor kid, Chen Lin?"
Liu Dawei looked at his emaciated daughter, feeling a pang of heartache as he gritted his teeth. It had been three days, and Liu Xiaomi hadn't eaten a thing, all for this ridiculous matter!
"Dad, you don't understand what kind of person Chen Lin is!"
Liu Xiaomi leaned weakly against the headboard, but her gaze was resolute. "He is willing to marry into our family for me. What does that show? It shows he truly loves me!"
Liu Dawei scoffed. "Xiaomi, have you lost your mind? A grown man willing to marry into a family either wants our money or is just a failure!"
Her mother, Wang Shufen, stood by, wiping her tears in desperation. "Xiaomi, please, can you eat something first? We can talk about this slowly."
"No!" Liu Xiaomi turned her head away defiantly. "If you don’t agree to my marriage with Chen Lin, I won’t eat!"
At that moment, her older brother Liu Zhiqiang walked in with a thermos in hand. "Little sister, look at yourself! Is this how you should be? Is it worth it to ruin yourself for a man?"
"Bigger brother, you don’t understand!" Liu Xiaomi's tears fell. "Chen Lin and I are truly in love. What does love have to do with money?"
Liu Dawei slammed the table in anger. "Xiaomi, when have you ever lacked money growing up? Do you even know what it's like to live without it?"
"I don’t care!" Liu Xiaomi's voice grew softer but her attitude remained firm. "Chen Lin is a good person and treats me well; that’s enough!"
Her second brother, Liu Zhihua, rushed over and shook his head at the scene. "Little sister, listen to me. We’ve investigated Chen Lin; his family is dirt poor and his parents are farmers. What makes him worthy of you?"
"Whether he’s worthy or not isn’t for you to decide!"
Liu Xiaomi struggled to sit up. "I want to marry him; I don’t care about anything else!"
Wang Shufen felt heartbroken. "Xiaomi, as someone who has been through it all, I can tell you that marriages between mismatched families are rarely happy. Look at your cousin; she didn’t listen and married that poor kid—how is she living now?"
"I’m not my cousin! Chen Lin isn’t that kind of person!"
Liu Xiaomi grew more agitated as she spoke. "He said he would take good care of me and this family after we get married!"
Liu Dawei laughed in anger. "Him? With a monthly salary of three thousand yuan, how can he take care of anyone? Xiaomi, stop being naive!"
"Dad, you’re looking down on him!"
Liu Xiaomi’s voice was hoarse now. "Although Chen Lin’s conditions aren’t good right now, he has ambition and is willing to marry into our family—that shows he is sincere!"
Liu Zhiqiang sighed. "Little sister, have you thought about it? A man willing to give up his surname to marry into a family—that’s not normal."
"You’re all talking nonsense!" Liu Xiaomi shouted with all her strength. "Chen Lin isn’t that kind of person! He’s making this sacrifice because he loves me!"
The room fell silent, with only the sound of Liu Xiaomi's rapid breathing breaking the stillness.
Wang Shufen looked at her daughter's pale face, her heart aching. "Xiaomi, if you keep this up, you might end up in serious trouble!"
"Then let me die!" Liu Xiaomi closed her eyes. "Anyway, you all refuse to let me be with Chen Lin. Living is pointless!"
"You... why are you so stubborn?" Liu Dawei's chest heaved with anger.
Liu Zhihua tugged at his father's sleeve. "Dad, why don't we let Xiao Mei meet Chen Lin first?"
"Meet what?!" Liu Dawei snapped. "I absolutely will not agree to this marriage!"
"Then just watch me die!" Liu Xiaomi covered her head with the blanket. "You only care about money, not about me as your daughter!"
Wang Shufen couldn't hold back her tears. "Xiaomi, saying that breaks my heart. I'm doing this for your own good!"
"If it were for my good, you would support my choice!" Liu Xiaomi's voice came from under the blanket, laced with sobs. "I'm already twenty-three; I know what's best for me!"
"Xiaomi," Wang Shufen sat down beside the bed, "do you really think Chen Lin is worth all this?"
A faint but resolute voice emerged from the blanket. "He is! He’s the best man I've ever met in my life!"
Liu Zhiqiang and Liu Zhihua exchanged glances, both recognizing the helplessness in each other's eyes. They had known since childhood that once their little sister set her mind on something, the whole family was powerless to change it.
"Dad, how about..." Liu Zhiqiang tentatively suggested.
"No way!" Liu Dawei cut him off decisively. "Absolutely not! I will never let my daughter marry a penniless loser!"
