"Uncle, Aunt, I know you look down on me, but please give me a chance to prove myself!"
Chen Lin knelt in the living room of the Liu Family, his knees hitting the ground heavily.
Liu Xiaomi had been on a hunger strike for five days; she was close to collapse.
Liu Dawei looked at the young man kneeling before him, his feelings complicated. This kid had some backbone; he dared to stand up at a critical moment.
"Get up; let's talk properly," Wang Shufen softened, "What’s the point of kneeling?"
"No, I won't get up!"
Chen Lin's voice choked with emotion. "Xiaomi has suffered so much for me; what is my little grievance compared to hers? Uncle, Aunt, I know I'm not worthy of Xiaomi, but I truly love her!"
Liu Zhiqiang sneered, "What do you have to offer her? Your monthly salary is only three thousand; can you even buy her a bag?"
"Brother is right," Chen Lin lowered his head. "I am indeed very poor, but I have a sincere heart. Moreover, I am willing to marry into the Liu Family and change my surname to Liu so that Xiaomi won’t have to suffer with me."
Liu Dawei was taken aback. "You’re willing to change your surname?"
"Yes!" Chen Lin raised his head, tears brimming in his eyes. "As long as I can be with Xiaomi, I would do anything!"
Wang Shufen was moved. "Child, do you really mean that?"
"I do!" Chen Lin's voice was firm. "Xiaomi is my life; without her, what’s the point of living?"
At that moment, a weak voice came from upstairs. "Chen Lin... are you here?"
"Xiaomi!" Chen Lin quickly stood up and ran upstairs. "I'm here!"
The Liu Family followed him upstairs and saw Chen Lin holding Liu Xiaomi as they both cried.
"I'm sorry, Xiaomi; it's all my fault for being useless and making you suffer," Chen Lin gently wiped away Liu Xiaomi's tears.
"It's not your fault; my parents are too stubborn," Liu Xiaomi weakly leaned against Chen Lin's embrace.
Seeing this scene, Wang Shufen's tears fell as well. Her daughter loved this boy so much; if they truly opposed it, Xiaomi would hate them for a lifetime.
"Xiaomi, can you eat something first?" Chen Lin coaxed. "Seeing you like this breaks my heart."
"I won't eat unless my parents agree to our relationship," Liu Xiaomi insisted stubbornly.
Liu Dawei looked at his daughter, realizing that if this continued, she might truly be in trouble.
"Chen Lin," Liu Dawei spoke up, "were your words just now sincere?"
"Absolutely!" Chen Lin immediately stood up. "Uncle, I swear I will treat Xiaomi well for the rest of my life and be a good son to you and Auntie!"
Liu Zhihua frowned. "Anyone can say such things; the key is whether you can follow through."
"Second Brother, please give Chen Lin a chance!" Liu Xiaomi struggled to sit up. "He really is a good person!"
Chen Lin quickly supported her. "Xiaomi, don't get too worked up; your health is important."
Then he turned to the Liu family. "Brothers, I know you are looking out for Xiaomi. How about this: give me three months to prove myself. If I don't do well, I'll leave on my own and never trouble Xiaomi again."
"Three months?" Liu Zhiqiang pondered for a moment. "How do you plan to prove yourself?"
"I can stay here and help take care of Uncle and Auntie's daily needs, and I can also learn at the company," Chen Lin said sincerely. "Although I come from a humble background, I'm willing to learn, work hard, and I'm not afraid of hardship."
Wang Shufen looked at her husband. "Old Liu, why not give it a try? Xiaomi is already like this..."
Liu Dawei remained silent for a long time before finally letting out a long sigh. "Fine, I'll give you three months. But let me be clear: if I find out you have any improper intentions, I won't let you off easily!"
"Thank you, Uncle! Thank you, Auntie!" Chen Lin was so excited that he almost knelt down but was stopped by Liu Dawei.
"Xiaomi, can we eat now?" Wang Shufen gently touched her daughter's face with concern.
Liu Xiaomi smiled; it was the first time she had smiled in five days. "Okay, I'll eat."
From then on, Chen Lin woke up every morning at five to prepare breakfast for the whole family; at night, after everyone had gone to bed, he would tidy up the house.
"Mom, please be careful; the steps are a bit slippery," Chen Lin said cautiously as he helped Wang Shufen downstairs.
"Dad, your tea has cooled down; let me get you a fresh cup," he always kept an eye on Liu Dawei's needs.
"Big Brother, could you take a look at this document and see if there are any issues?" At the company, Chen Lin was exceptionally diligent.
Liu Zhiqiang privately told his brother, "This kid is quite clever and really works hard."
"Yeah, but I wonder if he's sincere or just putting on an act," Liu Zhihua still had some doubts.
A month later, Chen Lin had fully integrated into the Liu family's life.
Wang Shufen's attitude towards him had clearly softened.
"Xiao Chen, you are such a thoughtful child, more considerate than my two sons," Wang Shufen praised.
"Auntie, this is what I should do," Chen Lin humbly replied. "You and Uncle are like my own parents."
Liu Dawei watched from the side; indeed, Chen Lin's performance during this time had been impeccable.
"Chen Lin, come with me tomorrow to meet some clients."
"Sure, Uncle! I will study hard!" Chen Lin exclaimed joyfully, like a child.
Liu Xiaomi observed everything with a heart full of happiness. She knew that Chen Lin was a good man, and one day her family would accept him.
Two months later, not only had Chen Lin gained Wang Shufen's approval, but even Liu Dawei began to appreciate this son-in-law.
"Old Liu, I think this kid is quite good," Wang Shufen said to her husband. "He has good character, is filial, and most importantly, he truly cares for Xiaomi."
"Yes, he is indeed better than I expected," Liu Dawei nodded. "And he's not slow-witted; he learns quickly at the company."
When the three-month period was up, Liu Dawei took the initiative to approach Chen Lin. "Young man, you've passed the test. If you truly want to marry Xiaomi, we can start preparing for the wedding."
"Thank you, Uncle!" Chen Lin was so moved that tears welled up in his eyes.
Upon hearing this news, Liu Xiaomi was so delighted that she leaped into Chen Lin's arms. "I knew my judgment wouldn't be wrong!"
Seeing his daughter's happy smile, Liu Dawei felt a sense of relief in his heart. Perhaps he had indeed overthought things before...
