"It's a son!"
The sound of a baby's cry filled the delivery room, and Chen Lin was so excited that tears streamed down his face.
Liu Xiaomi lay weakly on the hospital bed, her face radiating happiness.
"You've worked hard, Xiaomi," Chen Lin held his wife's hand tightly. "We finally have our own child."
Liu Dawei cradled his grandson, unable to contain his joy. "This child looks wonderful; he has Xiaomi's eyes and Chen Lin's chin."
"Dad, let's give the baby a name," Liu Xiaomi said weakly.
"Let's call him Liu Haoran. Liu Haoran, a name full of righteousness," Liu Dawei nodded in satisfaction.
Wang Shufen busily moved around, "Xiao Chen, is there anything else you need? Mom will go buy it for you."
"Mom, you don't need to worry. Everything is ready," Chen Lin said thoughtfully. "You've been tired all day; please go home and rest."
The family was immersed in the joy brought by new life.
No one expected that Liu Dawei would suddenly collapse at work.
"Dad! Dad!" When Liu Zhiqiang rushed to the hospital, his father was already in a coma.
"Doctor, what happened to my dad?" Liu Zhihua asked anxiously.
"The patient seems to have suffered from long-term exhaustion combined with recent stress, leading to organ failure," the doctor shook his head. "The situation is not optimistic."
Chen Lin stayed by his father-in-law's side in the hospital room, refusing to leave for even a moment. "Dad, you must hold on; Liu Haoran is waiting for you to teach him how to walk."
But three days later, Liu Dawei passed away peacefully, as if he had simply fallen asleep.
"Dad!" Liu Xiaomi held her child and wept inconsolably. "How could you just leave us like this?"
Chen Lin held his wife tightly. "Xiaomi, please don't cry; Dad wouldn't want to see you like this from above."
Wang Shufen cried so hard she nearly fainted. "Old Liu, how could you leave us like this?"
After the funeral, the Liu family was shrouded in sorrow.
Wang Shufen spent her days in tears, and her health deteriorated rapidly.
"Mom, please take care of yourself," Chen Lin made porridge and brought medicine to his mother-in-law every day. "Xiaomi still needs you to take care of her, and Liu Haoran needs his grandmother."
"Xiao Chen, you are a good child," Wang Shufen said, holding Chen Lin's hand. "If it weren't for you, I really don't know what this family would do."
"Mom, this is what I should do," he replied.
Six months later, Wang Shufen's health deteriorated. She was often dizzy and nauseous, unable to eat.
"Mom, let me take you to the hospital for a check-up," Liu Zhiqiang said with concern.
"No need, it's just what your father thought," Wang Shufen waved her hand. "When people get old, various ailments come up."
"Mom, it's still better to get checked," Chen Lin urged.
After the examination, the doctor said, "The elderly lady is suffering from heartache due to her husband’s passing, combined with age-related decline in bodily functions. She needs to rest more and maintain a cheerful mood."
However, Wang Shufen's condition did not improve; it only worsened. In the end, she passed away peacefully, just like her husband.
"Mom!" Liu Xiaomi cried desperately. "Why did it have to be this way? Why did you leave me all alone?"
"Xiaomi, you still have me, and Liu Haoran, and two older brothers," Chen Lin comforted his wife.
The blow of losing their parents left the Liu siblings in deep pain, but life had to go on. The affairs of the company were mainly handled by the two older brothers, with Chen Lin assisting them.
"Zhiqiang, the company's performance has been good lately; shouldn't we consider expanding?" Chen Lin suggested in the office.
"Yes, since Mom and Dad are gone, we need to manage the company even better," Liu Zhiqiang nodded.
Liu Zhihua, however, expressed some doubts. "I can't shake the feeling that our parents' deaths are somewhat strange; they had the same symptoms."
"Second brother, you're overthinking it," Chen Lin laughed. "The doctor said one was due to overwork and the other was heartache from losing her husband."
"Maybe I'm just being paranoid," Liu Zhihua shook his head.
One evening a year later, Chen Lin invited his two brothers over for dinner.
"Come on, let's raise a glass for the development of our company and for Mom and Dad watching over us from above," Chen Lin said as he lifted his glass.
"I drove here; I can't drink," Liu Zhiqiang replied.
"It's okay, I won't drink today. I'll take you back later," Chen Lin said thoughtfully.
The three brothers chatted late into the night, and Chen Lin drove his two older brothers home. However, on the way, the car suddenly lost control and crashed into a large tree by the roadside.
"Help! Please, help!" Chen Lin crawled out of the car, covered in blood. "Call 120! My brothers are still in the car!"
By the time the ambulance arrived, Liu Zhiqiang and Liu Zhihua had already lost their lives. Although Chen Lin was seriously injured, he survived.
The doctor, addressing the inconsolable Liu Xiaomi, said, "Your husband has a broken leg and will need to be hospitalized."
"Why? Why did this happen?" Liu Xiaomi cried despairingly while holding her child. "My parents are gone, and now my brothers too!"
"Xiaomi, don't cry. I will take care of you and your child," Chen Lin said weakly from his hospital bed.
From then on, the vast family estate of the Liu family fell entirely into Liu Xiaomi's hands. Naturally, Chen Lin became the pillar of the family.
"Wife, you haven't looked well lately. Are you too tired?" After his recovery, Chen Lin made it a point to bring Liu Xiaomi warm milk every night. "Drink some milk; it's good for your health."
"I don't want to drink it; I have no appetite," Liu Xiaomi replied listlessly.
"Come on, be good. You need to take care of yourself for Liu Haoran's sake," Chen Lin coaxed gently.
Liu Xiaomi reluctantly took a few sips of milk but soon felt dizzy and nauseous.
"Xiaomi! What's wrong with you?" Chen Lin quickly supported his wife.
"I... I feel so unwell..." Before Liu Xiaomi could finish her sentence, she fainted.
"Quick! Get her to the hospital!" Chen Lin picked up his wife and rushed towards the car, but it broke down at that moment.
By the time the ambulance arrived, it was already past the critical time for rescue.
"I'm sorry; we did our best," the doctor said as he took off his mask and shook his head while leaving the emergency room.
"No! This can't be happening!" Chen Lin cried over his wife's lifeless body. "Xiaomi, you can't leave me and Liu Haoran behind!"
At that moment, a police officer approached him. "Sir, please cooperate with us for an investigation."
"What investigation?" Chen Lin raised his head.
"According to the doctor's preliminary assessment, the symptoms of the deceased resemble those of poisoning. We need to conduct a detailed examination."
Chen Lin's face instantly turned pale...
