"Chen Lin, according to the forensic report, a large amount of chronic poison residue has been found in your wife, Liu Xiaomi's, body."
In the interrogation room, the police slammed a thick report onto the table. Chen Lin stared at the document, his hands beginning to tremble slightly.
"This... this is impossible! How could Xiaomi be poisoned?" Chen Lin feigned shock. "Officer, you must be mistaken."
"Mistaken?" The veteran detective scoffed. "The autopsy reports for your father-in-law and mother-in-law are also in. The same poison, the same dosage. How long are you going to keep pretending?"
Chen Lin's face turned pale instantly. "You... you exhumed my in-laws' bodies?"
"Yes, we conducted autopsies on all four deceased members of the Liu Family," the officer fixed his gaze on Chen Lin. "Guess what the results were?"
"I don't know... I don't know anything..." Chen Lin's voice began to quiver.
"All four had the same type of chronic poison in their systems!"
The officer enunciated each word carefully. "Moreover, according to the analysis of the poison residue, they were poisoned continuously over a period of two years until they died!"
"No... that's impossible..." Chen Lin slumped in his chair.
"We also checked your online shopping records," the officer pulled out another document. "Over the past two years, you used a fake ID to purchase large quantities of chronic poison online. This poison is colorless and odorless, making it difficult to detect when mixed with food."
Chen Lin closed his eyes; he knew it was all over.
"Now tell us, why did you do this?" the officer asked.
After a long silence, Chen Lin suddenly laughed—a cold laugh. "Why? You want to know why?"
"Yes, we want to know. The Liu Family treated you well; why did you kill them?"
"Treated me well?" Chen Lin shot up his head, malice filling his eyes. "Do you know how much humiliation I endured in that house?"
"Explain yourself!"
"Liu Dawei looked at me like I was a beggar! Wang Shufen treated me like a servant!" Chen Lin's voice grew more agitated. "And those two brothers—on the surface, they were polite to me, but behind my back, they mocked me endlessly!"
"But later they accepted you, didn't they?"
Chen Lin sneered. "They would never truly accept me! In their eyes, I will always be that poor outsider!"
"So you decided to kill their entire family?"
"I wanted their money!" Chen Lin tore off his facade and revealed his true self. "I wanted them to understand the cost of looking down on me!"
"How did you poison them?"
"It's simple," Chen Lin said with a smug smile. "Liu Dawei likes to drink tea, so I mixed poison into the tea leaves. Wang Shufen loves the soup I make, so I poisoned the soup. Both of my brothers like to gather at my house for dinner, so I poisoned the dishes."
"What about Liu Xiaomi?"
Xiaomi... Chen Lin's expression became complicated. "She drinks the warm milk I give her every night."
"Aren't you afraid of feeling guilty?"
Chen Lin burst into laughter. "When Liu Dawei said I wasn't worthy of his daughter, my conscience died! When Wang Shufen treated me like a dog, my conscience died!"
"What about Liu Xiaomi? She loves you so much!"
Chen Lin's smile suddenly froze. After a long pause, he said, "Xiaomi... she truly loves me. But she's too naive; she doesn't understand that in this world, love is worthless—money is what matters most."
A crazed light flickered in Chen Lin's eyes. "Human nature is such that the poor are always looked down upon by the rich! Human nature dictates that a man without money will never earn respect!"
"If I don't kill them, I'll spend my life as their dog!" Chen Lin shouted. "Now it's good; they're all dead, and the money is mine! I no longer have to bow to anyone!"
"You're not even human!" The police officer slammed the table in anger.
"Not human? Maybe," Chen Lin replied coldly. "But at least I'm alive, and I've gotten everything I wanted."
"What have you gained? You're about to be sentenced to death!"
Three months later, the court began hearing the case.
"The defendant Chen Lin is found guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced to death, to be executed immediately!"
The judge finished reading the verdict while Chen Lin sat expressionless in the defendant's seat.
"Liu Dawei was right; a mismatched marriage really has no good outcome," a relative sighed.
"Poor Xiaomi, she died without ever knowing what kind of person she loved."
"And that child is now an orphan; it's truly pitiful."
As Chen Lin was taken away, he glanced back at the audience. Among the crowd, he saw Liu Haoran, the two-year-old child, crying in his aunt's arms.
In that moment, a flicker of guilt crossed Chen Lin's heart. But soon, he suppressed that feeling.
A year later, Chen Lin was executed.
