The two ran for about half an hour, confirming they were not being followed before stopping in front of a secluded teahouse.
"Let's rest here for a moment," Xiao Zhongyan suggested. "I come here often; the owner is reliable."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement, and they entered the teahouse, requesting a private room. The teahouse was quiet at night, with almost no customers, making it an ideal hiding place for them.
"I didn't expect to encounter assassins and nearly get caught by Zhong Mo," Xiao Zhongyan sighed. "It seems someone doesn't want the Nangong Family Case to be reopened."
Nangong Shuang pondered, "Xiao Er Gongzi seems to be at odds with the Crown Prince and has other backing. The assassins tonight don't seem like ordinary guards; they appear to be professionally trained killers."
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "I suspect it's people from the Shadow Pavilion. The Shadow Pavilion is a secret organization within the court that specializes in eliminating threats to the royal family. The Nangong Family fell victim to them years ago. Now that you’ve returned to the capital, they certainly won't let you go easily."
A chill ran down Nangong Shuang's spine. "Shadow Pavilion..." She remembered her father's letter mentioning this name. "Why are they so wary of the Nangong Family?"
"Because the secrets recorded in the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique could threaten the current royal family's rule," Xiao Zhongyan explained. "And as the last bloodline of the Nangong Family, possessing the Medical Book, you naturally become a thorn in their side."
After a moment of thought, Nangong Shuang asked, "Then what about the Cold Poison in my body?"
Xiao Zhongyan looked at her intently. "The Cold Poison Physique is a characteristic of royal bloodlines; only descendants of royalty possess it. It is said that the previous dynasty's royal family had a special constitution that could withstand cold and toxins that ordinary people cannot endure, which is why the Nangong Family became court physicians."
Nangong Shuang suddenly understood: no wonder her father emphasized finding the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique to resolve the Cold Poison within her. It turned out this Cold Poison was not a true toxin but rather an expression of her bloodline!
"Then how can I eliminate the Cold Poison?" Nangong Shuang asked eagerly.
Xiao Zhongyan contemplated for a moment. "The Five Qi Returning to Origin Method mentioned in the Medical Book is key. However, it requires specific herbs and conditions, especially Qianxin Grass, which is extremely rare."
Nangong Shuang nodded. "I've read the Medical Book; that's indeed true. But Qiao Er said we could use connections with the Azure Dragon Gang to find these herbs."
Xiao Zhongyan's eyes lit up. "Azure Dragon Gang? They do have the capability to locate such rare herbs. However, this matter must remain confidential; we cannot let anyone from the Shadow Pavilion know."
As they were deep in conversation, a sudden sound of hurried hoofbeats came from outside, followed by soldiers shouting, "Search for fugitives! Search house by house; leave no one behind!"
Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan exchanged glances, realizing that people from Xiao Mansion were closing in on them.
"What should we do?" Nangong Shuang whispered. "They will likely search the teahouse."
Xiao Zhongyan remained calm. "Don't worry; I'm familiar with this teahouse's layout. There's a secret passage in the backyard that leads outside the city."
He stood up, took Nangong Shuang's hand, and gently pushed open the back window of their room, revealing a narrow corridor. The two quietly made their way along it until they reached the backyard of the teahouse.
The backyard was cluttered with various items, casting deep shadows under the moonlight. Xiao Zhongyan skillfully found a hidden door behind a pile of firewood and opened it to reveal a dark passageway.
"This is an escape route left by the teahouse owner in case of an official raid," Xiao Zhongyan explained. "Only a few people know about it."
They slipped into the passageway as Xiao Zhongyan carefully closed the door behind them. The passage was pitch black, and Nangong Shuang took out some phosphorescent powder to illuminate their path. They groped their way forward as the corridor grew narrower until they had to bend down to continue moving forward.
