After about half an hour of walking, a faint light finally appeared ahead. Xiao Zhongyan pushed open a small door, and the two of them emerged from the passage, finding themselves in a grove outside the city.
"We're safe now," Xiao Zhongyan sighed in relief. "We're a good distance from the city wall; they won't be able to catch us here."
Nangong Shuang looked around to confirm that no one was following them before she felt at ease. However, at that moment, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her left wrist where the Plum Blossom Birthmark was located.
"Ah!" Nangong Shuang couldn't help but gasp, crouching down.
"What’s wrong?" Xiao Zhongyan rushed over to check on her.
Nangong Shuang clutched her left wrist in pain. "It's the Cold Poison... it's acting up again..."
Her face quickly turned pale, cold sweat beading on her forehead as her body began to tremble uncontrollably. This was a typical symptom of Cold Poison; each episode drained a significant amount of her vitality.
Seeing this, Xiao Zhongyan immediately took out a small porcelain vial from his pocket. "This is the Hui Yang Dan that my mother treasured. It might help alleviate the symptoms."
Nangong Shuang gritted her teeth as she took the pill and swallowed it with difficulty. The effects kicked in quickly; she felt a warm current rising from her stomach, gradually spreading throughout her body as the chill receded and her pain lessened.
"Are you feeling better?" Xiao Zhongyan asked with concern.
Nangong Shuang nodded and weakly stood up. "Thank you. This Hui Yang Dan is indeed remarkable; it can suppress the Cold Poison so swiftly."
Xiao Zhongyan explained, "This is a recipe from the Nangong Family that my mother learned from your mother. She kept a few on hand just in case."
Nangong Shuang was deeply touched; Madam Xiao had been preparing an antidote for the descendants of the Nangong Family all along, and this gesture warmed her heart immensely.
"We need to hurry back to the city. You must return to Guo Residence before dawn, or it will raise suspicion," Xiao Zhongyan reminded her.
Nangong Shuang agreed, and the two of them made their way along the edge of the grove, taking a long detour before returning to the city through a small path near another gate.
By the time they returned to Guo Residence, the eastern sky was already lightening. Qiao Er had been waiting anxiously inside; upon seeing Nangong Shuang return safely, she finally relaxed.
"Miss, I was so worried about you!" Qiao Er hurried over to support her.
Nangong Shuang briefly recounted their experiences from that night to Qiao Er, including the assassination attempt at Xiao Mansion and the pursuit by Xiao Zhongmo.
Qiao Er's expression changed drastically upon hearing this. "So, Young Master Xiao has confirmed your identity and wants to kill you?"
Nangong Shuang nodded. "Not only that, but people from Shadow Pavilion are also investigating me. The situation is more complicated than we imagined."
Qiao Er was filled with concern. "Then will you still attend tomorrow's Shang Mei Ban?"
Nangong Shuang thought for a moment before resolutely saying, "Yes, I must go. It’s a good opportunity to see how Xiao Xiang feels about the Nangong Family. At the same time, I need to further investigate clues regarding Feng Yu Pavilion."
Just as they were deep in conversation, a voice called out from outside: "Sister Shuang, are you awake?"
Nangong Shuang quickly composed herself and instructed Qiao Er to open the door. Guan Chunyi entered cheerfully, holding a beautifully crafted new dress.
"Sister, I had someone rush this new dress for you to wear to the banquet tomorrow," Guan Chunyi said excitedly. "The invitation from Young Master Xiao is so thrilling; I couldn't sleep all night!"
Nangong Shuang forced a smile as she took the dress, but her heart was filled with worry. The banquet tomorrow likely concealed hidden dangers, yet in order to uncover the truth, she had no choice but to go against the current and face even greater challenges.
"Thank you, Miss," Nangong Shuang replied softly. "We will go together tomorrow, and I will make sure you shine before Young Master Xiao."
Guan Chunyi nodded happily and then asked with concern, "Sister, you look a bit tired. Were you too exhausted at Xiao Mansion yesterday?"
