Nangong Shuang came to her senses and shook her head. "No, the hairpin is beautiful, and I really like it. It's just..." She hesitated, choosing her words carefully. "This hairpin seems to have some history, and I'm afraid accepting it might bring trouble."

"My lord, please calm down. I truly have nothing but honesty to convey..." another unfamiliar male voice responded in a low tone, laced with evident fear.
"Hmph! The Nangong family's case has been closed for ten years. Why does the Crown Prince suddenly want to reopen it? Who is behind this? Is it someone from your Xu family?" Xiao Xiang's voice grew closer.
Xiao Zhongyan's face turned pale. "This is bad; my father is coming this way! Nangong Shuang, you must not be discovered!"
Nangong Shuang realized the danger as well; if Xiao Xiang found out she had sneaked into Xiao Mansion at night, it would not only cause trouble but could also expose her identity.
"Quickly, let's go this way!" Xiao Zhongyan grabbed Nangong Shuang's hand and hurried toward the other side of Mei Garden.
Just as they left the pavilion, Xiao Xiang's voice came from the other side. "Take me to Mei Garden; I need some peace and quiet."

Xu Daren's voice trembled. "Lord Xiao, I am merely a messenger. The Crown Prince has already decided to reopen this case; even the Emperor has nodded in agreement. This matter is set in stone and beyond our control..."
"Nonsense!" Xiao Xiang retorted angrily. "How could the Emperor agree? Does he not fear the secrets of the Nangong family being exposed?"
Xu Daren sighed deeply. "My lord may not know; recently, the Crown Prince obtained a fragmented copy of the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique and has learned some secrets. He believes that the Nangong family was wronged and insists on restoring their honor."
