Nangong Shuang nodded, feeling a sense of respect for Xiao Zhongyan's forthrightness.
"However, our top priority now is to ensure your safety," Xiao Zhongyan said seriously. "That man in black clearly knows your identity and that you took the 'Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique.' He is likely from the 'Shadow Pavilion' and will continue to pursue you."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank at the mention of the 'Shadow Pavilion.'
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "The 'Shadow Pavilion' is a secret organization of the royal family, tasked with handling unsavory missions. The Nangong Family fell victim to them years ago. Now that you have returned to the capital, they will not let you go easily."
After a moment of contemplation, Nangong Shuang asked, "So what do you think I should do now?"
Xiao Zhongyan pondered for a moment. "In the short term, it would be best for you to stay at Guo Residence; it is relatively safe there. I will secretly send people to protect you. Meanwhile, I will continue gathering evidence to support the prince in reopening the Nangong Family case. Once the time is right, you can reclaim your identity openly without having to hide anymore."
Nangong Shuang nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Young Master. But tonight's incident may cause trouble for you."
Xiao Zhongyan shook his head. "It’s nothing to worry about. Although that man in black saw us together, he doesn’t know that I have recognized your identity. I will publicly claim that you are merely a guest at Xiao Mansion who happened to be caught up in an assassination attempt."
After discussing their plans, Xiao Zhongyan promised to continue investigating the 'Shadow Pavilion' and the truth behind the Nangong Family case while ensuring Nangong Shuang's safety.
"It's getting late; let me escort you back to Guo Residence," Xiao Zhongyan suggested.
Nangong Shuang agreed with a nod, and they carefully avoided the patrolling night watchmen as they made their way through a secluded alley. Throughout their journey, Xiao Zhongyan remained vigilant, wary of any reappearance of the man in black.
Upon reaching the back door of Guo Residence, Xiao Zhongyan stopped and looked deeply at Nangong Shuang. "Do not mention tonight's events to anyone. I will send someone to protect you in secret; if there’s an emergency, go to 'Qingfeng Pavilion' in the east of the city to find me. The manager there is my person and will notify me immediately."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement. "Thank you, Young Master. You should also take care of your injury; although the poison has been suppressed by the Antidote Pill, it still requires further treatment."
Xiao Zhongyan smiled slightly. "It’s nothing; I’ll take care of it once I return home." He paused before adding, "By the way, about that Meihua Jade Hairpin..."
Nangong Shuang suddenly remembered that she had used the hairpin to strike at the man in black's acupoint and now had no idea where it was. Apologetically, she said, "I used it against my enemy; it might be lost now. I'm truly sorry."
Xiao Zhongyan dismissed her concern lightly. "The hairpin belongs to you anyway; it should return to its rightful owner. If fate allows, it will find its way back to you."
Nangong Shuang felt warmth in her heart; it turned out Xiao Zhongyan had known all along that the hairpin was a relic of the Nangong Family and had intended to return it to her.
They bid farewell at the back door of Guo Residence, with Xiao Zhongyan reminding her, "You must still attend tomorrow's Shang Mei Ban. I will arrange everything so that you won’t be in danger."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement and watched as Xiao Zhongyan disappeared into the night.
Quietly slipping into Guo Residence, Nangong Shuang found Qiao Er anxiously waiting in her room. Upon seeing Nangong Shuang return safely, Qiao Er let out a sigh of relief. "Miss! I was so worried! Are you alright?"
Nangong Shuang shook her head and briefly recounted her experiences from that night to Qiao Er, including how Xiao Zhongyan had recognized her identity and the attack by the man in black.
Qiao Er gasped in shock after hearing this. "So your identity has been exposed? That man in black could very well be from the 'Shadow Pavilion'!"
Nangong Shuang nodded solemnly. "Yes, things are more complicated than we imagined. However, it's a stroke of luck that Xiao Zhongyan is willing to help us."
