The two quietly left the inner courtyard and walked along a secluded path toward the front yard. Laughter and the sound of firecrackers echoed in the distance, clearly indicating that the lantern parade was in full swing, creating a lively atmosphere.
"By the way, you mentioned you have important clues about the Nangong Family Case?" Nangong Shuang recalled his earlier words.
Xiao Zhongyan nodded. "Some new evidence has been collected from the Crown Prince's Mansion, proving that the Nangong Family was not plotting rebellion but was framed instead. The most crucial piece is a secret letter written by the then Minister of War to Nangong Laoyezi, warning him that someone intended to harm the Nangong Family."
Nangong Shuang's heart skipped a beat. "Where is this letter?"
"It is kept in the Crown Prince's Mansion," Xiao Zhongyan replied. "However, the Crown Prince has already ordered a re-investigation of the case based on this letter. The Nangong Family's vindication is just around the corner."
Nangong Shuang felt a mix of emotions—joy and worry intertwined. The vindication of the Nangong Family had been her wish for ten years; yet, she also realized that as the investigation deepened, her identity might be exposed, bringing danger along with it.
They soon arrived at the front yard, where lights illuminated the area and guests filled it. Teams of lantern bearers wandered through, showcasing dragon lanterns, phoenix lanterns, butterfly lanterns, and more—each unique and dazzling. Guan Chunyi was enjoying herself with several friends, excitedly pointing out various displays.
"Sister Shuang, where have you been? I've been looking for you everywhere!" Guan Chunyi exclaimed as she spotted Nangong Shuang and rushed over to link arms with her.
Nangong Shuang smiled. "There were too many people earlier, so I went to the back courtyard for some fresh air. I happened to run into Xiao Gongzi and came back with him."
Guan Chunyi glanced between Nangong Shuang and Xiao Zhongyan, a hint of something unusual flashing in her eyes before she quickly returned to her cheerful demeanor. "I see! Xiao Gongzi, I heard the Crown Prince specifically requested your service; you can't be too willful now."
Xiao Zhongyan smiled slightly. "Thank you for the reminder; I shall head to the Crown Prince now." He turned to Nangong Shuang and said meaningfully, "Nangong Shuang, the Lantern Festival isn't over yet; I hope you enjoy yourself tonight."
Nangong Shuang understood his implication and nodded gently. "I certainly will."
Xiao Zhongyan took his leave, and Nangong Shuang followed Guan Chunyi to admire the lanterns. Though her eyes were on the brilliant displays, her mind was replaying what she had overheard earlier—the Prime Minister, Xiao Xiang, and Xu Daren were clearly conspiring against the Crown Prince, with the Nangong Family Case being a key element. It seemed that as the case's re-examination approached, various factions were beginning to stir.
"Sister Shuang, look at that Phoenix Lantern! It's so beautiful!" Guan Chunyi exclaimed excitedly as she pointed at a massive Phoenix Lantern.
Nangong Shuang followed her finger and saw a grand Phoenix Lantern drifting by slowly. The lantern was intricately carved and lifelike; its light shone through painted paper, casting vibrant shadows.
"It truly is beautiful," Nangong Shuang replied softly before suddenly recalling something. "Miss, in ancient times, phoenixes often symbolized royalty, especially queens and consorts."
Guan Chunyi blushed slightly. "Sister is teasing me again."
As they chatted and laughed, a maid hurried over. "Miss Guo, your father says it's getting late; we should prepare to return home."
Guan Chunyi pouted slightly. "Must we leave so soon? The Lantern Festival isn't over yet!"
The maid explained, "Your father mentioned there’s an early court meeting tomorrow; it’s best not to stay out too late."
Reluctantly, Guan Chunyi nodded in agreement and walked toward the gate with Nangong Shuang. Along the way, she kept glancing back at those beautiful lanterns with a wistful look in her eyes.
Upon reaching the gate, Lord Guo was already waiting by their carriage. Seeing his daughter and Nangong Shuang approach, he nodded slightly. "How was today's banquet? Did you enjoy yourselves?"
Guan Chunyi pouted again. "Just when it was getting lively, we have to leave! How can that be enjoyable?"
Lord Guo smiled and said, "You can come again another day. Lord Xiao mentioned that there will be an even grander Lantern Festival on the night of the Yuanxiao Festival, so it's not too late to come then."
