She turned into a narrow alley, where few people ventured, flanked by high walls on both sides. Just as she contemplated whether to take out the jade token given to her by Xiao Zhongyan, three men in black suddenly appeared at the entrance, blocking her path!
Nangong Shuang's heart raced as she quickly turned to flee, only to find two more men in black had emerged behind her, sealing off her escape route!
"Nangong Girl, this time you can't escape," the leader of the black-clad men said coldly, a hint of a sinister smile in his voice. "Hand over the Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique, and I can make your death a quick one."
Nangong Shuang glanced around and realized she was surrounded with no hope of escape. Taking a deep breath, she feigned panic and said, "The Heavenly Fragrance Life-Extending Technique isn’t with me; it was taken by my maid."
The man in black scoffed. "Stop lying! Your maid has already been captured. She said you were carrying the Medical Book with you."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank at his words: Qiao Er had been captured? That couldn't be! The people from the Crown Prince's Mansion had clearly said she was safely escorted! This man was clearly trying to deceive her.
"Is that so?" Nangong Shuang pretended to be flustered. "Then... I admit defeat. But the Medical Book is hidden in a secret place; you'll have to follow me to retrieve it."
The black-clad man looked at her suspiciously. "Do you think I would fall for that?"
Nangong Shuang thought quickly. "If I were deceiving you, could five of you not subdue a single weak woman?"
After pondering for a moment, the man nodded. "Fine, you can't escape anyway. Lead the way, but don’t try anything funny; otherwise, I’ll make your life worse than death."
Nangong Shuang nodded in agreement and walked deeper into the alley under the escort of the black-clad men. She pretended to be frightened, stumbling as she walked while secretly preparing for her chance to counterattack.
Reaching the end of the alley, they faced a high wall with no way out.
"We're here," Nangong Shuang pointed to a corner. "The Medical Book is hidden in the crevice at the base of the wall."
The men in black looked at each other skeptically; two stepped forward to check the corner while the other three kept a wary eye on Nangong Shuang.
At that moment, as the two men crouched down to inspect, Nangong Shuang sprang into action! She swiftly pulled out a pouch of powder from her sleeve and threw it into the air! The powder quickly spread through the air, forming a faint blue mist.
"Trap!" shouted the leader of the black-clad men, but it was too late.
"Mihunxiang!" Nangong Shuang whispered as she took out a cloth and covered her mouth and nose.
The blue mist rapidly enveloped them; before they could react, they had inhaled the Mihunxiang. They felt dizzy at first, then their consciousness began to blur and their movements became slow and uncoordinated.
"Kill her!" the leader struggled to shout but soon collapsed onto his knees.
The other black-clad men fell one after another, except for one who reacted quickly enough to hold his breath and lunged at Nangong Shuang! She was prepared; dodging his attack with a swift motion, she drew a silver needle from her hair and accurately struck it into the pressure point at the back of his neck.
The man let out a muffled groan, his body stiffened before he slumped to the ground unconscious.
Nangong Shuang did not linger; taking advantage of the cover provided by Mihunxiang, she quickly scaled over the wall and escaped from danger. Once on solid ground, she didn’t return directly to the Crown Prince's Mansion but took several twists and turns to ensure no one was following her before making her way back home.
By the time she returned to the Crown Prince's Mansion, it was already evening. Xiao Zhongyan awaited anxiously at the courtyard entrance upon hearing news of her ambush.
"It’s too dangerous!" Xiao Zhongyan scolded. "I told you not to go out alone."
Nangong Shuang smiled reassuringly. "It's nothing to worry about; they were just a few men in black. A little use of Mihunxiang took care of them."
Xiao Zhongyan shook his head and sighed. "You’re being too careless. The people from the Shadow Pavilion are hunting for you everywhere, and one misstep could cost you your life."
