On a night in July 2006, the nightclub in Xichang City was filled with dazzling lights and the clinking of glasses. 0

Forty-two-year-old Zhang Jianhua, dressed in a tailored suit and wearing a gold watch on his wrist, looked every bit the successful businessman. He held a glass of wine, his eyes fixated on the enchanting Chen Yumei on stage. 0

In reality, Zhang Jianhua was far from being a big boss; he was merely a small-time hustler. Yet, this old con artist was so skilled in his deception that he almost believed the story he had crafted for himself. 0

"Boss, you really are wealthy; you spend thousands without a second thought," Chen Yumei said as she nestled closely beside Zhang Jianhua, her voice sweet and alluring. 0

Zhang Jianhua felt a surge of satisfaction. He had spent most of his life in prison, having been incarcerated for fraud since he was sixteen. He had gone in and out of jail repeatedly, and now, after finally returning to Xichang in 2005, he decided to turn over a new leaf and run an honest business. 0

To his surprise, after making some small profits, he found himself able to attract such a beautiful young woman. 0

"Little Mei, stick with your brother; I won't treat you poorly," Zhang Jianhua promised, thumping his chest confidently. 0

Chen Yumei was just over twenty and undeniably attractive; having worked in such an environment, she had encountered many men. However, Zhang Jianhua's lavish spending and not-so-bad character caught her interest. 0

Before long, the two developed a romantic relationship. Zhang Jianhua genuinely cared for her and always thought of her when he came across something good. He believed he was finally on the path to becoming a winner in life—his business thriving and now with a beautiful girlfriend by his side; it felt like everything was going his way. 0

Not long after, Chen Yumei introduced him to her cousin Sang Hongying, who also worked at the nightclub. This young woman was more calculating; seeing Zhang Jianhua's wealth, she aimed to connect him with potential business opportunities. 0

In August 2006, Sang Hongying introduced one of her "clients" to Zhang Jianhua—a man named Zhang Xianwu, who was several years older and had connections in tobacco procurement and sales. 0

"Brother Jianhua, let's work together; we can definitely make a fortune!" Zhang Xianwu was an open-hearted person who hit it off with Zhang Jianhua immediately. 0

Zhang Jianhua also found this potential partner appealing; they clicked well and decided to venture into the tobacco business together. 0

In the following months, business indeed flourished. Zhang Jianhua and Zhang Xianwu both made a considerable amount of money, and their families grew closer. Zhang Xianwu's wife, Cui Chunqiong, along with their son, Zhang Jian, their daughter, Zhang Ju, and her boyfriend, Wu Zhongtao, all held a very favorable impression of Zhang Jianhua. 0

"Uncle Jianhua is such a nice person—wealthy and generous," Zhang Ju constantly praised him. Hearing this made Zhang Jianhua's heart swell with joy. 0

However, the good times did not last long. One night in September, as Zhang Jianhua was preparing to find Chen Yumei, he spotted her and Zhang Xianwu holding hands and laughing as they walked out of a nightclub. 0

Zhang Jianhua's mind went blank, as if struck by lightning. He quickly hid in the shadows, watching helplessly as his girlfriend and business partner got into the same car together. 0

"Those two bastards!" Zhang Jianhua gritted his teeth, his fists clenched tightly. 0

From that day on, he maintained a facade of brotherhood with Zhang Xianwu and continued his affectionate interactions with Chen Yumei, but inside he was seething with resentment. 0

"Damn it! I finally tried to be a good person, and this is how you repay me!" he muttered to himself while drinking alone. "Since you have no sense of loyalty, don't blame me for being ruthless!" 0

Having endured many hardships throughout his life, he had thought he could finally wash his hands of trouble and live a normal life. But reality dealt him a harsh blow. 0
