Zhang Jianhua believed his plan was flawless.
On October 26, he hired a renovation team to re-cement the floor of his new house on the first floor. Looking at the smooth surface, Zhang Jianhua felt a sense of satisfaction: "Now, no one will know that seven bodies are buried beneath."
"This is simply perfect!" he thought, filled with pride.
In the following days, Zhang Jianhua acted as if nothing had happened. He continued with his daily routine, eating and drinking, occasionally pretending to be concerned in front of friends: "Hey, why can't I reach Xianwu? It's really strange."
However, this old conman overestimated himself.
On October 29, trouble struck. Zhang Xianwu's nephew could no longer wait and went to the police station to report: "Officer, my uncle's family has been missing since the 14th; all five of their phones are turned off. This is definitely not normal!"
Upon hearing this, the police immediately realized the severity of the situation. One person going missing might be an accident, but five people from the same family disappearing at once was certainly suspicious.
The Xichang Public Security Bureau quickly established a special investigation team. During an analysis meeting, the team leader stated: "Comrades, this case is not simple. Five people have gone missing simultaneously, and all their phones are off; there is a 99% chance they have been harmed. We need to act quickly and find leads."
The investigation team began a thorough search. They retrieved the last few days' call records, movement trajectories, and social connections of the missing persons, verifying each one meticulously.
After a week of intense work, the police identified a key suspect—Zhang Jianhua.
"This Zhang Jianhua is highly suspicious!" the deputy team leader pointed to the investigation report and said, "First, he had financial disputes with Zhang Xianwu and was involved in illegal dealings together; second, the last phone signals from the missing persons were near his residence; third, he was the last person seen with them."
On November 17, when the police prepared to arrest Zhang Jianhua, they discovered he had already been detained for fraud. This old conman had not changed his ways; after committing murder, he had resumed his deceitful activities.
Finally, in detention, facing interrogation from the special investigation team, Zhang Jianhua still tried to evade responsibility.
"Officer, I really don’t know anything. What does Zhang Xianwu’s disappearance have to do with me?" he feigned innocence.
"Zhang Jianhua, stop pretending! We have gathered substantial evidence," the team leader said coldly.
"What evidence? I have a clear conscience!" Zhang Jianhua continued to deny any wrongdoing.
On November 19, the investigation team searched his rented apartment on the third floor. Technicians using specialized equipment discovered numerous bloodstains on the floor and also found blood spots in concealed areas on the walls.
"Zhang Jianhua, how do you explain these bloodstains?" The interrogator slammed the identification report onto the table.
Upon seeing the report, Zhang Jianhua's face turned pale. He knew he was finished.
That night, unable to bear it any longer, Zhang Jianhua finally spoke up, "I... I confess, I confess everything..."
"Where are they?"
"In... in the basement of my new house..." Zhang Jianhua said, his voice trembling.
The task force immediately rushed to the scene and excavated seven bodies from the living room using an excavator.
Everyone present was shocked; no one expected that this seemingly cultured middle-aged man was actually a cold-blooded murderer.
But that was not the end of it.
"Zhang Jianhua, your method of killing is so skilled; this can't be your first crime!" an experienced detective pressed on.
Under relentless questioning from the police, Zhang Jianhua confessed to the murders of Xu Shiming and Tang Xia eight years ago.
Soon after, police unearthed two more skeletons in the family area of Longan Well Housing Management Bureau.
Thus, the shocking "Xichang Butcher" case was completely solved.
In court, Zhang Jianhua tried to make one last desperate attempt.
"Your Honor, I have mental issues; I request a psychiatric evaluation!" he shouted in court.
But the judge was not swayed: "Zhang Jianhua, your motives are clear, your methods brutal; the process was premeditated and planned—this is behavior of a normal person. Your request for a psychiatric evaluation is denied!"
In 2007, Xichang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Zhang Jianhua to death in the first trial. Unhappy with the verdict, he appealed.
In 2008, Sichuan Provincial High People's Court upheld the original ruling: "Zhang Jianhua killed nine people consecutively with extreme brutality, posing a significant threat to society; he is sentenced to death according to law!"
On March 27, 2009, Zhang Jianhua was executed.
This 42-year-old man who once sought to regain his "masculine dignity" ended up not only failing to gain the respect he desired but also becoming the despised "Xichang Butcher," dying without dignity.
Nine innocent lives were thus buried by one man's twisted possessiveness and vanity. The transformation of Zhang Jianhua from victim to perpetrator—from seeking face to completely losing his qualification as a human being—raises a profound question:
When a middle-aged man's self-esteem is wounded, how should he confront it? Should he choose tolerance and reason or revenge and destruction?
Zhang Jianhua provided us with a bloody answer through nine lives and his own.
