Hearing this, Nangong Shuang couldn't help but smile bitterly; the Prime Minister truly wouldn't let go easily.
The Crown Prince hurried over and said solemnly, "The Prime Minister has brought an imperial decree this time, stating that he wants to take you to the palace for questioning. My power is limited; I fear I cannot stop him."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank: Going to the palace? Wasn't that like a sheep entering a tiger's den?
Qiao Er grew anxious. "Miss, you absolutely must not go! Entering the palace would mean certain death!"
After pondering for a moment, the Crown Prince whispered, "There is only one way now: you must leave the Crown Prince's Mansion immediately and hide for a while. I will do my best to buy you time while continuing to investigate the real culprit."
Nangong Shuang hesitated. "But Madam Xiao..."
The Crown Prince said firmly, "I will send someone to search for Madam Xiao. Your safety is more important; the truth of the Nangong Family case still needs you to uncover it!"
After some consideration, Nangong Shuang finally nodded in agreement. "Alright, I will hide for now, but I will definitely uncover the truth and seek justice for the Nangong Family!"
The Crown Prince instructed, "Leave through the secret passage in the back courtyard. I will send a trusted aide to guide you to safety."
Nangong Shuang gratefully bowed. "Thank you for your assistance, Your Highness. What about Xiao Gongzi...?"
"Xiao Zhongyan has already been taken back to Xiao Mansion by his father’s men," the Crown Prince replied. "Before he left, he instructed me to protect you and said he would find a way to contact you."
Nangong Shuang nodded and packed a simple bag in preparation for her departure. Before leaving, she glanced at the jade pendant in her hand and suddenly had a bold guess: "Bloodline Eternal... Could this be related to Royal Bloodline? What connection does the Nangong Family have with the royal family?"
As dusk fell, the white walls and black tiles of the cemetery in the eastern part of town appeared particularly eerie under the setting sun. Dressed in a plain-colored dress and wearing a straw hat, Nangong Shuang entered through the gate of the cemetery alone. Since escaping from the Crown Prince's Mansion, she had been careful to hide her whereabouts and had only quietly returned to Guo Residence these past few days to find temporary shelter.
"Is there another new corpse brought in?" Nangong Shuang asked softly, her eyes scanning her surroundings cautiously.
The Old Daoist in charge of the cemetery nodded, his wrinkled face creasing further. "The one sent yesterday also had that strange Plum Blossom Poison Spot on its chest."
Nangong Shuang's heart tightened. This was already the sixth corpse with a Plum Blossom Poison Spot within a short period of time. The previous victims all had intricate connections with the Nangong Family; she wondered who this one could be.
"Take me to see it," she said quietly.
The Old Daoist hesitated for a moment. "Miss, this corpse was just brought in not long ago; it might not be pleasant..."
Nangong Shuang gently shook her head. "It’s fine; I have practiced medicine for many years and am accustomed to life and death. Moreover, these poison spots on the deceased may be related to clues I am searching for."
Seeing her insist, the Old Daoist had no choice but to lead the way, guiding her through several courtyards until they arrived at a side room in the back yard. Just as they reached the door, Nangong Shuang felt a strange sensation—there seemed to be someone inside.
"Has someone been here already?" she asked warily.
The Old Daoist was taken aback. "I don't know. Today, besides you, no one else has come to check on the body."
Nangong Shuang's heart sank; she was about to retreat when a familiar voice came from inside the room, "Who is outside?"
That voice—Xiao Zhongyan!
