Nangong Shuang knew that Xiao Zhongyan was testing her, so she pretended to ponder. "From the symptoms, it does resemble Mei Ying San, but there are differences. Perhaps... it's a variant of Mei Ying San?"
"Mei Ying San?" Xiao Zhongyan raised an eyebrow slightly. "You actually know the name of this poison?"
Nangong Shuang cursed herself internally for slipping up again. She quickly covered, "I came across it in a Medical Book. It mentions that it's a rare and deadly poison, causing plum blossom-shaped spots on the chest of the afflicted, leading to certain death within seven days."
Xiao Zhongyan nodded thoughtfully and did not press further. He turned his attention to examining other parts of the corpse, particularly the nails and mouth.
"Here," he pointed at the deceased's nails, "there's a faint bluish-purple hue, which is a sign of poisoning. But it's not as severe as in the previous victims."
Nangong Shuang noticed this too. "Yes, the nails of the earlier victims were almost completely blue-purple, while this person only shows slight discoloration."
The two carefully examined the deceased's mouth and eyes, finding that compared to the earlier victims, the symptoms were indeed much milder.
"Strange," Xiao Zhongyan murmured to himself. "Why do the symptoms differ so much with the same Mei Ying San?"
Nangong Shuang had a vague answer in her mind but did not voice it. She continued to feign confusion. "Could it be that the method of poisoning was different? Or perhaps the formula of the poison has changed?"
Xiao Zhongyan thought for a moment and nodded. "That's possible. What concerns me more is that this Lu Zhanggui has no obvious connection to the previous victims. Why would he also fall victim to such poisoning?"
Nangong Shuang shared the same question in her heart. The earlier victims were all related to the Nangong Family, either former servants or informants. But this Lu Zhanggui seemed like an ordinary merchant—what connection could he have with the Nangong Family?
Just as they were deep in thought, a sudden sound of footsteps came from outside. Both turned alertly towards the door.
"Who could it be?" Nangong Shuang whispered, feeling an ominous premonition rising within her.
Xiao Zhongyan's expression grew serious. "I don't know. But tensions have been high in the city lately; we should be cautious."
The footsteps grew closer and finally stopped outside the door. With a soft sound, the door was pushed open.
"Who is inside?" a commanding voice called out.
Nangong Shuang nervously glanced towards the door and saw a middle-aged man dressed in Constable attire standing there, his sharp gaze assessing both of them inside the room.
"Official," Xiao Zhongyan cupped his fists in greeting, his tone calm, "I am Xiao Zhongyan from Xiao Mansion. My father has recently been poisoned, and I came to investigate similar cases in hopes of finding an antidote."
The Constable scrutinized Xiao Zhongyan for a moment before his gaze shifted to Nangong Shuang. "And who is this young lady?"
Nangong Shuang felt a tightening in her chest as she prepared to answer, but Xiao Zhongyan spoke first. "This is Nangong Shuang from Guo Residence; she is skilled in medicine and has come to assist me."
The Constable nodded skeptically. "So you both came together?"
Xiao Zhongyan shook his head. "No, it was a chance encounter."
A flicker of doubt crossed the Constable's eyes, but he did not press further. He approached the corpse and leaned down for a closer look. "Another Plum Blossom Poison Spot... this makes it the sixth case recently."
Nangong Shuang noticed a hint of fatigue and helplessness in the Constable's tone.
"Have you found any clues, Official?" she asked tentatively.
The Constable sighed, "There are no leads at all. The victims are all different—some were officials, others commoners. The only thing they have in common is this strange Plum Blossom Poison Spot."
Xiao Zhongyan interjected, "This poison is called Mei Ying San; it is a rare and deadly toxin. Anyone poisoned will surely die within seven days, and they will suffer greatly before their end."
The Constable looked at him in surprise, "You know about this poison, Young Master?"
Xiao Zhongyan nodded, "My father was affected by the same toxin, so I have done some research on it."
