“Xiao Gongzi?” Qiao Er exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise. “Isn’t he supposed to be at the Crown Prince's Mansion? How could he be here at the funeral home?”
Nangong Shuang shook her head. “He said he came to investigate the matter of his father being poisoned, but I have my doubts. Perhaps the Crown Prince sent him to look into the case, or maybe…” She didn’t finish her thought, but she had a suspicion in her mind: Xiao Zhongyan might also be questioning his own father.
“Did you find anything during your visit, Miss?” Qiao Er changed the subject, knowing that Nangong Shuang was reluctant to discuss Xiao Zhongyan further.
Nangong Shuang recounted in detail what she had seen and heard at the funeral home, particularly about the “two formulas” mentioned by Xiao Zhongyan and the Poison Flower pattern that was a taboo for the Xiao Family.
“Two formulas?” Qiao Er pondered. “That is indeed an important clue. If there are truly two culprits, then things just got more complicated.”
Nangong Shuang nodded. “Moreover, on our way back, we encountered a strange old man who played the guqin. The tune was ‘Plum Blossom Three Variations.’”
“‘Plum Blossom Three Variations’?” Qiao Er exclaimed in surprise. “Isn’t that Lord Nangong’s favorite piece?”
Nangong Shuang nodded. “Exactly. What’s even stranger is that he noticed the Plum Blossom Birthmark on my wrist and invited us to attend the Qin Hui in three days, saying we might find ‘what we seek.’”
Qiao Er’s expression turned wary. “This old man has an unknown background and knows about your birthmark; he might have ulterior motives. The Qin Hui is likely a trap.”
Nangong Shuang shared her concern. “But if he truly knows something important, I can’t afford to miss it.”
Qiao Er frowned with worry. “Then at least don’t go alone. Perhaps Lord Guo can send someone to escort you?”
Nangong Shuang shook her head. “No, I can’t involve the Guo Family in this. Besides, Xiao Zhongyan has already offered to accompany me.”
Qiao Er hadn’t considered this and looked at Nangong Shuang in surprise. “Xiao Gongzi wants to go with you to the Qin Hui?”
Nangong Shuang nodded. “He said he would send an invitation tomorrow.”
Qiao Er hesitated before finally asking, “Do you really trust Xiao Gongzi? His father was involved in the massacre of the Nangong Family…”
Nangong Shuang interrupted her. “I certainly don’t trust him completely. But for now, he is indeed helping us. Moreover, during such a dangerous time, we need allies.”
Qiao Er fell silent, merely preparing toiletries for Nangong Shuang. Sitting at her vanity, Nangong Shuang gazed at her weary reflection in the mirror, her mind racing with thoughts. Was Xiao Zhongyan friend or foe? Who was that mysterious old man? Could they truly find clues about the Nangong Family Case at the Qin Hui?
Just as she was lost in thought, Qiao Er suddenly spoke softly, “By the way, Miss, while you were away, someone delivered a letter that had to be handed directly to you.”
Nangong Shuang snapped back to reality. “A letter? Who delivered it?”
Qiao Er shook her head. “I don’t know; it was a little child who dropped it off and ran away. I was afraid it might be a trick, so I didn’t open it immediately.”
Nangong Shuang became alert. “Let me see it.”
Qiao Er took out a plain envelope with no markings from her pocket and handed it to Nangong Shuang. Cautiously, Nangong Shuang opened the envelope and pulled out a slip of paper. It read: “The Qin Hui has changed; danger approaches for you.”
“What does this mean?” Qiao Er leaned closer and gasped as she read the note. Her face paled suddenly. “It’s actually a warning telling you not to go to the Qin Hui? Could it really be as I suspected—a trap?”
Nangong Shuang pondered over those seven words. "Qin Hui has changed" is easy to understand; it indicates that Qin Hui is in danger. But who does the 'gentleman' refer to in "the gentleman is in peril"? Is it Xiao Zhongyan?
"This note is too suspicious," Nangong Shuang frowned and said. "First, the old man invited us to Qin Hui, and then someone sent a letter warning us. There must be a connection between the two."
Qiao Er nervously said, "Miss, perhaps we shouldn't go? It's too dangerous."
