It was the end of the workday at the construction site, and everywhere there were workers covered in dust and grime.
Li Jun was holding Xiao Ming as she approached the entrance, but an old man guarding the gate stopped her.
"What do you want? No idlers allowed on the site!" he said, glaring at her.
"Sir, I'm looking for someone. I'm looking for my husband, Zhang Qiang," Li Jun quickly explained.
"Zhang Qiang?" The old man thought for a moment. "Oh, that contractor's brother? He’s gone out, not here."
"When will he be back?"
"I don’t know. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow. Just wait here."
Li Jun felt a chill run through her. Having come all this way, she couldn’t just go back like this. She gritted her teeth and said, "Sir, can I wait here? I came all the way from my hometown."
The old man looked at her holding the child and didn’t want to chase her away. "Fine, you can wait at the entrance, but don’t go into the site."
Li Jun sat down on a stone at the entrance while Xiao Ming squirmed in her arms. "Mommy, I need to pee."
"Be good and hold it for a bit."
"I can't hold it anymore!" Xiao Ming started to cry.
At that moment, several workers who had just finished their shifts passed by and noticed Li Jun sitting there with the child. They looked over with curiosity.
"Hey, who’s that woman?" a young worker asked.
"They say she’s looking for Zhang Qiang," replied the old gatekeeper.
"Looking for Zhang Qiang?" A few workers gathered around. "Who are you to him?"
"I’m his wife," Li Jun stood up, feeling a bit nervous.
The workers exchanged glances, their faces showing strange expressions.
"Wife?" One tall and thin worker scratched his head. "But..."
"But what?" Li Jun's heart sank.
"Nothing, nothing," the tall worker quickly waved his hand.
However, another fat worker couldn’t help but speak up: "Bro, she doesn’t look like the woman in the photo."
"What photo?"
"It's the one in Zhang Qiang's wallet, the one we've all seen," the Fat Worker said, suddenly realizing he had misspoken and quickly shut his mouth.
But it was too late. The other workers began to whisper among themselves, and someone quietly said, "It's over now, we're in trouble."
Another joked, "Zhang Qiang, huh? Two wives!"
"What two wives!" Li Jun exclaimed, growing anxious. "You all need to clarify!"
Seeing the situation escalate, the workers began to disperse.
The Tall and Thin Worker quickly tried to smooth things over: "Sister-in-law, don't listen to their nonsense; they might have seen it wrong."
"I didn't see it wrong!" the Fat Worker insisted, raising his neck. "There is indeed a woman's photo in Zhang Qiang's wallet, and she doesn't look like this at all. That woman is much prettier and dressed like someone from the city."
"You're talking nonsense!" Li Jun cried, her eyes reddening as she held her child. "How could there be another woman's photo in Zhang Qiang's wallet!"
"Sister-in-law, please don't get upset," the Tall and Thin Worker tried to comfort her, but the Fat Worker couldn't stop.
"Am I lying? Just a couple of days ago, Zhang Qiang took it out to show us, saying it was a new friend he met in Tianjin. That woman was stunning and fashionable. We even asked him how such a beautiful woman could be interested in him."
"Shut up!" the Tall and Thin Worker glared fiercely at the Fat Worker.
"Mommy, what's wrong?"
Li Jun held her son tightly as tears streamed down her face.
Her worst fears had finally come true.
"Sister-in-law, please don't cry; it might be a misunderstanding," the Tall and Thin Worker attempted to console her.
Li Jun wiped her tears away. "If he has another woman's photo in his wallet, how can that be a misunderstanding?"
At that moment, the Old Gatekeeper also came over to intervene: "You kids can't keep your mouths shut? What business do you have meddling in their marriage?"
The Fat Worker finally realized he had caused trouble and muttered softly, "I didn't mean it; I just said it casually..."
"Is that how you talk? Hurry up and disperse," the Old Gatekeeper scolded.
The workers scattered in small groups.
Li Jun sat down again with her child, feeling as if her heart had been turned upside down.
She had traveled a long way here, originally holding onto a glimmer of hope, thinking maybe she had been overthinking things.
But now, the truth was laid bare before her.
"Zhang Qiang, you heartless man!" she cursed inwardly. "I’m at home struggling to raise our child while you’re out there looking for someone else!"
Xiao Ming was still crying, and she mechanically patted the child’s back.
As night fell, most of the workers at the construction site had left.
Only Li Jun remained, sitting on a stone at the entrance, waiting for that unfaithful man to return.
