"I'm sorry, brothers." Hui Jinbo raised the steel pipe and brought it down hard on the back of Boss Li Guanzhong's head.
"Bang!"
Li Guanzhong let out a muffled groan as blood began to flow from his head. Yet, he had not completely lost consciousness and was still struggling on the ground.
Next, Hui Jinbo turned his attention to several others, striking them in quick succession. The steel pipe crashed down on their heads and necks, blood splattering everywhere.
Li Junhui stood to the side, his face pale and hands trembling, but there was no way to retreat now.
"Old Li, what are you still standing there for?" Hui Jinbo glanced back at Li Junhui. "Come over and help!"
Li Junhui shakily approached and took the steel pipe that Hui Jinbo handed him. Under Hui Jinbo's coercion, he also began to attack a few of the victims.
However, merely hitting them with the steel pipe was not enough. Although some were injured, they were not yet dead.
Hui Jinbo looked at the victims on the ground who were still faintly groaning. He pointed toward a nearby hot tub. "Drag them over to the water."
"What?" Li Junhui couldn't believe his ears.
"I said drag them into the water!" Hui Jinbo's voice turned frantic. "If we're going to do this, we need to go all the way!"
They dragged seven victims one by one to the edge of the hot tub and forcibly pushed them under the water. Some were already unconscious, while others still had a flicker of awareness.
As they were submerged, instinctively they began to struggle, but their bodies, weakened from being struck with the steel pipe, had little strength left to resist.
"Gurgle..." The chilling sounds from beneath the water echoed ominously.
Li Junhui watched the bubbles and struggling figures in the water, unable to hold back his vomit. Yet under Hui Jinbo's intimidation, he still participated in this massacre.
Seven innocent lives came to an end in that hot tub just like that. The entire ordeal lasted about half an hour, which felt like a century for both Hui Jinbo and Li Junhui.
When it was all over, the bathhouse fell into a deathly silence.
"It’s over, completely over." Li Junhui slumped to the ground.
"What’s the point of saying that now?" Hui Jinbo, though appearing calm on the surface, felt fear inside. "It’s already happened; we can only take it one step at a time."
Forty-two hours later, this shocking murder case that stunned the nation was uncovered by the police. The scene in the bathhouse left even veteran officers, who had seen countless cases, in shock.
The case was quickly solved. Zhao You and Li Deyun, although not directly involved in the murders, were arrested as accomplices. Wang Jiangqing, Hui Jinbo, and Li Junhui were all captured. Even Hui Jinbo's wife, Zhou Yanxia, was arrested for harboring them.
On the morning of July 29, 2003, at 8:30 AM, the Beijing Second Intermediate People's Court faced an unprecedented trial. Outside the courthouse, police cars lined the streets, and inside, security was tight. Dozens of reporters stood with cameras waiting for the start of this historic trial.
The sound of handcuffs clinking echoed outside the courtroom. The first to be brought in was the main perpetrator, Hui Jinbo. This 29-year-old man, who once believed he could turn his life around through crime, now looked haggard and had lost all his previous arrogance.
Next came Li Junhui. The 32-year-old from Beijing kept his head down, unable to meet the eyes of the victims' families in the audience.
As the judge began to read a judgment that spanned more than ten pages, silence fell over the courtroom. Eleven family members of the victims sat in the front row; some were silently crying while others clenched their fists tightly.
"…The defendant Hui Jinbo is guilty of intentional homicide and robbery; he is sentenced to death, to be executed immediately…"
"…The defendant Li Junhui is guilty of intentional homicide and robbery; he is sentenced to death, to be executed immediately…"
At that moment when the verdict was announced, suppressed cries filled the courtroom. It was the sound of anguish from the victims' families—pain mixed with a hint of relief.
Afterward, reporters were allowed to interview the two main perpetrators. Facing the cameras, Li Junhui quietly said, "I’m sorry to them... Better a short pain than a long one; it’s better to leave early."
Hui Jinbo responded to reporters' questions with an expressionless face: "I don’t want to see my family."
In the end, these two men who once thought they could change their fate through crime were escorted into a police vehicle bound for execution. The civil compensation lawsuit filed by eleven victims' families for over 1.6 million yuan ultimately amounted to nothing. The two main perpetrators were about to face execution, and other accomplices had no means to provide compensation.
