On the eve of the graduation project defense, Zhou Mingxuan asked me to add Bai Luoluo's name to my work.
I looked at Bai Luoluo behind him, her eyes glistening with tears, and angrily refused.
His tone was filled with disappointment. "Gu Suli, do you really have to throw a tantrum at this moment? Luoluo has given so much blood to Anqi; what’s wrong with you sharing some of the credit with her?"
Seven years ago, I was adopted by the Zhou family and came to see them as my true family. My feelings for Zhou Mingxuan had evolved from complex to uncontrollable.
To repay Bai Luoluo for donating blood to my sister, he had me accompany her on shopping trips on her birthday and even gave up my room for her to stay in.
I tolerated all of that, but now he wanted me to hand over my hard-earned graduation project, ruining my future.
This time, I didn’t want to endure it any longer.
"Anqi's life was saved by Luoluo; this is what we owe her."
His face turned pale, his eyes filled with disappointment towards me, as if I were the one being unreasonable.
"Ming Xuan, forget it," Bai Luoluo said, choking back tears. "If Suri Sister doesn’t want it, then I don’t need this credit."
Don’t need it?
I almost laughed out loud. If she truly didn’t want it, why was she crying like that? Why put on this act in front of Zhou Mingxuan?
"Luoluo, you’re too kind," Zhou Mingxuan said as he turned to gently stroke her hair, his actions so tender that it made my eyes sting. "This is what we owe you."
"Owe her?" I suddenly stood up, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. "So you’re going to ruin my future for that?"
Zhou Mingxuan sneered, "Gu Suli, when did you become so selfish?"
Selfish?
Seven years ago, I was adopted by the Zhou family. On the day I arrived, Zhou Mingxuan held my hand and told me that this was my home.
He would stay by my side when I had nightmares and stand up for me when I was bullied by classmates.
I thought I finally had a real home.
I regarded him as the most important person in my life and considered the Zhou family my true family. I put in all my efforts to fit into this family.
I could say that I would give anything to the Zhou family, yet now he dares to call me selfish.
"Do you really think I should give my graduation project to her?" My voice trembled.
Zhou Mingxuan's face turned pale with anger. "You just don't understand the bigger picture. Luo Luo saved Anqi's life; isn't that enough of a debt for you to repay?"
Repay.
Again, it was about repayment.
Ever since Bai Luoluo appeared in the Zhou family, these two words have been all I've heard.
She gave blood to Anqi, so now I have to give up my room for her to stay.
She donated blood to Anqi, so I have to accompany her shopping on her birthday.
She donated blood to Anqi, so I have to cater to her every whim and endure her domineering attitude.
I remember last month when I caught her stealing an antique vase from the Zhou family, and how she spoke harshly to the servants.
Every time I reminded Zhou Mingxuan, he would say I was narrow-minded and ungrateful.
Gratitude? What gratitude?
"She saves a life with one blood donation, so what does my seven years count for?"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted them.
Zhou Mingxuan's gaze turned icy in an instant: "The Zhou family has supported you for seven years; how can that be compared to a life-saving grace?"
My chest felt heavy, and I turned to leave.
"Gu Suli!" Zhou Mingxuan called from behind, "Think it through before you decide."
I didn’t look back.
The next day, Anqi was discharged from the hospital, and we went to pick her up. On the way, Anqi suggested going out to the countryside for some fresh air, and I reluctantly agreed.
Bai Luoluo wasn’t walking properly; she insisted on sticking close to Zhou Mingxuan while walking and ended up twisting her ankle.
She sat on the ground, tears streaming down her face: "It hurts so much! Am I going to be okay? Did I break something?"
I checked her ankle; there was no swelling at all.
"It's okay, if it hurts, just take a break," I said softly.
Bai Luoluo cried even harder, "Suri Sister, it really hurts. Can we go to the hospital?"
Zhou Mingxuan pushed me aside and squatted down to check on her, his face tense. "Luoluo, how are you feeling?"
"Ming Xuan, I'm so scared," Bai Luoluo grasped his hand tightly. "Will there be any aftereffects?"
Without a second thought, Zhou Mingxuan picked her up in his arms. "I'll take you to the hospital."
"What about Anqi and me?" I frowned and asked.
He didn't look back. "You two figure out how to get back."
I stood there in shock, watching him carry Bai Luoluo out of sight.
Anqi tugged at my sleeve. "Sister, what should we do?"
I sighed and patted her head.
The early autumn wind carried a chill as I held Anqi close, and it wasn't until midnight that we finally managed to hail a cab.
