As we got out of the car, I held Anqi's hand and made our way toward the mountaintop.
The lights of the villa at the summit stood out brightly against the night sky. Just as we finally reached the entrance, Zhou Mingxuan's car drove through the gate.
He approached us with a grim expression, "Where have you two been? I've been looking for you for ages."
I scoffed, "Are we supposed to just stand around waiting for you to find us in the middle of the night?"
He paused, his face darkening, and fell silent.
Pushing open the door, I saw Bai Luoluo already changed into her pajamas, sitting on the sofa watching TV, her feet wrapped in thick bandages.
"Suri Sister!" she feigned annoyance. "Why did you come back so late? Ming Xuan was worried sick."
I glanced at Zhou Mingxuan. "Really? I couldn't tell."
Bai Luoluo quickly waved her hands. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't gotten hurt, Ming Xuan wouldn't have had to rush off and leave you two behind."
"Luoluo, don't blame yourself," Zhou Mingxuan interrupted her, his icy gaze directed at me. "Some people just don't know how to behave."
Anqi tugged at my sleeve. "Sister Su Li, I'm hungry."
"Suri Sister, Anqi must be starving," Bai Luoluo pretended to care. "If it weren't for my unfortunate injury, Anqi wouldn't have had to suffer."
After finally tidying up and taking a shower, I had just settled down when there was a knock at the door.
Bai Luoluo stood at the entrance holding a cup of milk. "Suri Sister, I'm here to apologize."
I didn't move. "Apologize for what?"
"It’s all my fault for what happened today." She squeezed past me and walked over to the desk. "I know you're upset, so this cup of milk is my little gesture."
As soon as she finished speaking, the cup of milk suddenly slipped from her hand, and the white liquid splashed all over my design drafts.
"Ah!" Bai Luoluo covered her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to!"
I stared at the design drafts soaked in milk, my blood boiling.
Footsteps hurriedly approached, and Zhou Mingxuan burst into the room.
"What happened?"
Bai Luoluo cried even harder. "I wanted to apologize to Suri Sister, but I accidentally slipped and ruined her design drafts."
Zhou Mingxuan glanced at the desk and frowned. "Gu Suri, why did you leave something important at the edge of the desk?"
I was furious at being blamed. "She spilled it! How can you blame me?"
"Bai Luoluo has already apologized; what more do you want?" His voice was impatient. "Apologize to Bai Luoluo."
I laughed bitterly, "Why should I?"
"Gu Suri." His tone suddenly turned cold. "Anqi's life is in Luoluo's hands, do you understand?"
I looked into his icy gaze and suddenly lost the desire to argue with him.
"I'm not apologizing."
Zhou Mingxuan's face turned ashen as he pulled Bai Luoluo out of the room.
The moment the door closed, I slumped into the chair.
The design draft was ruined; I had to start over.
At two in the morning, the door creaked open.
Anqi cautiously walked in. "Sister Su Li, why are you still awake?"
"Anqi, what are you doing here? You should go to bed."
"Sister Su Li." Anqi bit her lip. "I think Sister Luoluo is acting strange."
I paused my pen. "What do you mean?"
"When she was watching TV in the living room today, it seemed like her foot didn't hurt at all."
I let out a cold laugh. "I guessed it long ago."
The next morning, I searched the room thoroughly.
The design album my father left me was missing.
It was his only legacy and the source of my design inspiration.
I remembered how often Bai Luoluo came into my room, so I headed straight to her. She was in front of the mirror, fiddling with a newly acquired diamond necklace.
"Where's my father's album?"
"What album?" She turned around, innocently blinking her eyes.
My sharp eyes caught sight of her wastebasket, where fragments of the album lay.
"This is my album! Why did you tear it up?"
Bai Luoluo jumped in surprise. "Suri Sister, what are you talking about?"
I held up the fragments. "This is my father's legacy!"
She pretended to be shocked and covered her mouth. "But it’s filled with outdated designs. I thought it was an old book you bought."
"You’re lying! That album was kept neatly in the box; you deliberately took it out to tear it apart."
"I really don't know," Bai Luoluo cried, tears streaming down her face. "Suri Sister, I thought it was just trash."
Just then, Zhou Mingxuan appeared at the door, frowning.
"What happened now?"
I hurriedly explained, "She tore my father's album!"
Zhou Mingxuan glanced at Bai Luoluo and then at the pieces in my hand. "Gu Suri, is it really worth getting upset over a torn book?"
"Torn book?" My voice trembled. "You know very well this is the only keepsake my father left me!"
"Luo Luo didn't do it on purpose." He pulled Bai Luoluo closer. "She already apologized; what more do you want?"
Bai Luoluo grasped his arm. "Ming Xuan, it's my fault. I shouldn't have touched Suri Sister's things."
"It's just a book; it’s not worth much."
They left me alone to sift through the pieces of the album in the trash can.
In the afternoon, Anqi quietly approached me. "Sister Su Li, I have something to tell you."
I was busy trying to piece together the fragments of the album and absentmindedly replied, "What is it?"
"When you weren't here yesterday, I saw Sister Luo Luo taking pictures of your desk with her phone."
I was taken aback. "What did she take?"
Anqi whispered, "She took pictures of your design sketches, and several of them."
That evening, I sought out Zhou Mingxuan again.
"Zhou Mingxuan, we need to talk."
"What is there to talk about?" He didn't even look up, refusing to spare me a glance.
"Bai Luoluo secretly photographed my design sketches."
"Where's the evidence?"
"Anqi saw it."
"Anqi is just a child; she'll say whatever you tell her to." Zhou Mingxuan sneered. "Gu Suli, don't try to sow discord."
