Seeing that I couldn't communicate with Zhou Mingxuan, I decided not to argue with him any further.
I planned to start my own design company after graduation, completely moving out of the Zhou family and gradually repaying the kindness of Zhou Fu and Zhou Mu.
As long as I could graduate smoothly, that was enough to comfort myself.
On the day of the graduation design review, I arrived two hours early.
The exhibition boards were already set up, and sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the designs I had meticulously crafted. After a whole year of hard work, today was the day to see the results.
Bai Luoluo walked in gracefully in her high heels, a proper smile on her face.
"Suri Sister, today we will determine the winner," she said, gently stroking her exhibition board. "But no matter the outcome, we are still good sisters."
I ignored her.
The judges began to arrive one after another, with Zhou Mingxuan sitting in the center of the panel as a representative from the industry. He glanced at me with a gaze as cold as that of a stranger.
"First, let's have Bai Luoluo present her work."
Bai Luoluo elegantly walked to the front of the stage, her voice sweet and melodious. "Dear teachers, this is my graduation design, City of Light."
Familiar lines appeared on the projector.
My blood ran cold in an instant.
That was my design!
Applause erupted from the audience as several judges nodded in approval.
"Creative and innovative!"
"This color scheme is very bold and has great commercial value."
Bai Luoluo humbly bowed, "Thank you for the recognition, teachers."
It was my turn.
I trembled as I opened the projector; my once confident work now seemed absurd.
"Gu Suli, can you explain?" The mentor's voice came from the audience, "Your work is highly similar to that of Bai Luoluo."
All eyes were on me, whispers rising around the room.
"This is clearly my original work!" I protested weakly, my voice echoing in the empty hall. "I have the original drafts and sketches!"
In a panic, I rummaged through my bag for the design papers, but those sheets stained with milk were crumpled and barely legible.
"Gu Suli." Zhou Mingxuan suddenly stood up, looking heartbroken. "I never expected you would do something like this."
The room fell silent, so quiet that a pin drop could be heard.
"As a representative of Zhou Group, I am very disappointed in Gu Suli's actions," his voice resonated clearly through the microphone. "Bai Luoluo had previously discussed some creative ideas with her, only to have them exploited like this."
Bai Luoluo's eyes glistened with tears at the right moment. "Suri Sister, I didn't expect you to treat me this way. If I had known, I wouldn't have discussed anything with you."
"Luo Luo, you are too kind," Zhou Mingxuan said gently as he looked at her. "Some people are just like that; give them an inch and they take a mile."
I stood on stage like a clown.
The feeling of shame washed over me like a tidal wave, and my legs trembled.
“Zhou Mingxuan! How can you say that?”
“The truth is the truth,” he replied coldly, looking at me. “Gu Suli, you have disappointed me greatly.”
The panel of judges announced the cancellation of my eligibility for the award and suggested that the school investigate my academic integrity.
My design career had been sentenced to death just like that.
“That’s not true!” Anqi suddenly rushed onto the stage from the audience. “Suri Sister didn’t plagiarize!”
She ran up to Bai Luoluo, her face flushed with anger. “You secretly took photos of Suri Sister’s design drafts! I saw it!”
Bai Luoluo was startled by her sudden accusation and instinctively took a step back.
“Anqi, don’t make things up,” she said, her voice trembling slightly.
“I’m not making things up!” Anqi retorted loudly. “You even tore up Suri Sister’s father’s portfolio!”
Bai Luoluo's face turned pale in an instant, and in her panic, she stumbled backward, her high heels slipping on the smooth floor.
Anqi reached out to help her, but Bai Luoluo suddenly pushed her away with force.
Anqi fell off the platform.
“Ah—”
Anqi curled up on the ground in pain, her face contorted from the agony.
I rushed down from the stage and hugged her tightly. “Anqi! Anqi!”
Bai Luoluo was on the verge of collapsing when Zhou Mingxuan caught her just in time.
“Luoluo, are you okay?”
Tears streamed down Bai Luoluo's face. “Ming Xuan, I didn’t mean to. I was just so scared.”
I knelt on the ground and picked up Anqi.
“Sister Su Li, it hurts so much,” her voice was weak.
“Anqi, don’t be afraid. I’m here,” I said, my tears falling onto her face.
Holding the trembling Anqi tightly, I looked up at them.
“Zhou Mingxuan! Anqi is hurt like this, and you’re only concerned about her?”
Zhou Mingxuan glared at me instead. “Gu Suli, are you satisfied now? If it weren’t for you letting Anqi talk nonsense, would this have happened?”
As I watched him twist the truth, my grip on Anqi tightened, and the last shred of hope I had for him vanished.
I needed to take Anqi away.
