Anqi lay on the hospital bed, her small face as pale as paper.
The doctor said she had a bone fracture and would need at least two months to recover.
"Sister Su Li, it's all my fault," Anqi grasped my hand, tears streaming down her cheeks. "If I had rushed onto the stage earlier, you wouldn't have been misunderstood."
I gently stroked her forehead. "Silly girl, this isn't your fault."
The door to the ward was pushed open, and Zhou Mingxuan walked in. He was dressed in a sharp suit and held a bouquet of carnations.
"Anqi, your brother is here to see you," he said softly as he sat down beside her.
Anqi turned her face away, ignoring him.
Zhou Mingxuan looked at me. "Gu Suri, let's step outside for a moment."
I nodded and followed him out of the ward.
"Gu Suri, for the greater good, you should apologize to Luoluo. Just say you borrowed her idea; it will be better for everyone."
I was taken aback. "What are you talking about?"
"The news has spread. The whole school is talking about it. Luoluo cried all day, saying she doesn't want to see you suffer," Zhou Mingxuan said with an air of inevitability. "As long as you apologize, everyone will pretend this never happened."
I looked at him, realizing for the first time how unfamiliar his face had become.
"Zhou Mingxuan, you really make me sick."
He frowned. "What kind of attitude is that? I'm helping you clean up the mess!"
"Helping me?" I laughed, "You're helping Bai Luoluo, aren't you?"
"Gu Suri, don't be ungrateful." Zhou Mingxuan's tone turned cold. "Once Bai Luoluo graduates smoothly, she'll have nothing to do with the Zhou family. You can still join the Zhou Clan and live without worries."
I turned and walked away.
"Gu Suri!" he shouted behind me, "Don't push your luck!"
Back in the hospital room, Anqi was already asleep.
I gently stroked her head and suddenly remembered what my senior Cheng Hao had mentioned before—there was new research abroad for conditions like Anqi's.
I took out my phone and dialed Cheng Hao's number.
"Senior, is that research institute still recruiting patients?"
Cheng Hao was surprised. "Are you willing to take that patient you mentioned abroad?"
"Yes."
"The costs are not low, around five hundred thousand. But the results are indeed very good; one patient I know has completely recovered."
I gritted my teeth and said, "I understand."
The next day, I found Zhou Fu and Zhou Mu.
"Uncle, Aunt, I want to take Anqi abroad for treatment."
Zhou Mu looked at me with suspicion. "Abroad? We’ve taken Anqi overseas before, but it didn’t help."
I recounted the recent events and the progress at Cheng Hao's research institute to them.
Zhou Fu remained silent for a long time before finally patting my shoulder. "Child, you’ve suffered."
Zhou Mu's eyes turned red. "You should go. It’s better than letting Zhou Mingxuan make another mistake."
Three days later, I was pushing Anqi, who was in a wheelchair, preparing to go through security.
Suddenly, Zhou Mingxuan rushed over despite the security guards trying to stop him.
"Gu Suri! Where do you think you're going?"
I ignored him and continued pushing the wheelchair forward.
"She’s my sister! How dare you take her away?" Zhou Mingxuan blocked our path. "This is kidnapping!"
"Kidnapping?" I scoffed. "You really are a dedicated brother. You didn’t care when Anqi was injured, but now you suddenly remember she’s your sister?"
Anqi looked at him earnestly. "Brother, I want to go with Suri Sister."
"Anqi, she has brainwashed you! Come back with me!" Zhou Mingxuan tried to reach for the wheelchair, but I blocked him.
At that moment, Zhou Fu and Zhou Mu rushed over.
Zhou Fu's face was filled with anger. "Zhou Mingxuan, let them go."
Zhou Mingxuan's face turned pale as he looked at Zhou Fu in disbelief. "Dad, how can you do this?"
"Because Gu Suri truly cares for Anqi," Zhou Mu said with red eyes. "It was a mistake to entrust Anqi to you; you only make her suffer."
The boarding announcement sounded. I pushed Anqi toward the boarding gate.
Zhou Mingxuan shouted hysterically from behind, "Gu Suri! You will regret this! You will definitely regret this!"
I didn't look back.
At the moment the plane took off, I gazed through the window at the city below, growing smaller and smaller.
Anqi held my hand tightly. "Sister Su Li, are we never coming back?"
I gently stroked her hair. "Once you are fully recovered, we can go wherever we want."
