The faucet in the apartment was leaking again.
I crouched on the floor, mopping it up, while Anqi sat in her wheelchair, helping me organize the materials that Cheng Hao had sent over.
"Sister Su Li, are you tired?" Her voice was soft.
"Not at all," I replied with a smile, my hands continuing their work.
In truth, I was exhausted.
During the day, I washed dishes at the restaurant, and at night, I returned home to take care of Anqi and sort through research materials until dawn.
But seeing the color return to Anqi's face made it all worthwhile.
Cheng Hao pushed the door open, holding a report in his hand.
"Anqi's indicators are all improving; the new medication is very effective," he said as he handed me the report. "If we keep this up for another three months, she will fully recover."
I took the report, my hands trembling slightly. The dense numbers on the page represented hope.
"Really?" Anqi's eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Really," Cheng Hao said, ruffling her hair. "But you need to cooperate with the treatment and take your medicine on time."
Anqi nodded vigorously.
I watched her excitement, and a warm current surged through my heart. For the first time in three months, I felt that all the hardships had meaning.
Cheng Hao walked over to me and said, "You should take a break; you look unwell."
"I'm fine; I can manage."
"Don't push yourself," he said gently. "I've contacted a few design studios, and they are very interested in your work."
I was taken aback. "What?"
"Your talent shouldn't be buried; design is the path you should truly pursue."
"Cheng Hao, thank you." I looked into his sincere eyes, feeling a warmth inside.
"It's the result of your own hard work," he replied softly. "Gu Suri, you deserve a better life."
Later that evening, as I was organizing my materials, Anqi suddenly leaned in and whispered, "Sister Su Li, my brother is preparing to come find us."
I paused with my pen in hand. "It doesn't matter whether he comes or not."
"But Mom and Dad stopped him," Anqi blinked. "Mom said we can't let him hurt us again."
I nodded calmly.
I had completely lost faith in Zhou Mingxuan; how he chose to act was no longer my concern.
Zhou Mingxuan returned home from the airport, feeling as if he had lost his soul.
Bai Luoluo was sitting on the sofa, applying a face mask. Upon seeing him, she began to complain, "Why are you only just back? I’ve been so bored at home all alone."
Ignoring her, Zhou Mingxuan walked straight upstairs.
"Hey! What kind of attitude is that? I’m talking to you!" Bai Luoluo ripped off her face mask and chased after him. "Now that those two burdens are gone, shouldn’t you make it up to me? I saw a necklace I want; hurry up and buy it for me."
"Shut up!" Zhou Mingxuan suddenly turned around, his eyes bloodshot. "Get out of my way!"
Bai Luoluo was startled by his appearance but quickly regained her arrogance. "Why are you being so fierce? I’m Anqi’s great benefactor, and this is how you treat me?"
Without giving her another glance, Zhou Mingxuan slammed the bedroom door shut.
Anqi's treatment had entered its third month when Cheng Hao brought shocking news.
"The attending physician in the country found an issue while reviewing the medical records," Cheng Hao said as he placed a fax document on the table. "The blood type matching report provided by Bai Luoluo shows multiple signs of forgery."
The doctor retrieved the original blood type records, and the results left everyone stunned. My blood type not only matched Anqi's perfectly but was also the best match.
In contrast, Bai Luoluo's blood type was only marginally compatible and posed a serious risk of rejection.
The truth returned to the country, and the Zhou family was instantly thrown into chaos.
Zhou Fu slapped Zhou Mingxuan across the face, shouting, "Beast! Explain to me how this happened!"
Zhou Mingxuan covered his face, collapsing to the ground.
"Speak!" Zhou Mu's eyes were red with anger. "The doctor said Gu Suri is the best blood donor for Anqi. How could you be such an irresponsible brother?"
Zhou Mingxuan closed his eyes in pain. "I did it."
The living room fell into a deathly silence.
"You did it?" Zhou Mu's voice trembled. "You knew Gu Suri's blood type was the most compatible, yet you chose Bai Luoluo?"
"Because I love Gu Suri!" Zhou Mingxuan's voice was heart-wrenching. "I couldn't bear to let her endure the pain and risks of long-term blood donation, so I chose Bai Luoluo, who is easier to manage. Someone like her can be swayed with money."
"Slap!" Zhou Mu struck him again.
"What did you say? You love Gu Suri?" Zhou Mu's voice shook. "Then how have you treated her all these years? On her birthday, you went shopping for bags with Bai Luoluo while Gu Suri was left alone, feeling wronged until midnight! Do you even know that?"
Zhou Fu was trembling with rage. "You wretched fool! If you truly love her, why would you hurt her like this? Do you know how much she has sacrificed for this family? She considers us family, and you forced her away!"
Zhou Mingxuan covered his face and cried out in despair, "I thought this would protect her! I thought it would be better for everyone!"
"Protect?" Zhou Mu scolded through tears. "Gu Suri is kind-hearted; no matter how much you hurt her, she won't fight back. Is this how you ruin her feelings? Do you even deserve to say that you love her?"
At that moment, the police arrived, taking Bai Luoluo away for questioning on charges of fraud and intentional harm.
As she left, she cursed, "It's all that wretched Gu Suli's fault! If she hadn't left, how could this have been exposed?"
After hanging up the phone, I looked at Anqi, who was busy drawing.
She was sketching two girls holding hands under the sunlight, both wearing smiles on their faces.
"Sister Su Li, this is us," she pointed at the drawing and said. "When I'm all better, can we go see the lavender fields?"
"Sure," I replied, patting her head. "We can go wherever we want."
That night, I stood on the balcony, gazing at the distant city lights.
Zhou Mingxuan's affection was the greatest irony in this world.
Each time he showed indifference, each time he ignored me, each time he favored Bai Luoluo—all in the name of what he thought was love—he inflicted the cruelest torment on me.
It was truly laughable.
If this is his love, then I would rather not have it.
