Three years later, Anqi's illness was completely cured.
Cheng Hao's medical team developed a new drug that successfully controlled her condition, and the little girl became lively and cheerful again, her cheeks rosy.
As I watched her running in the sunlight, my eyes grew a bit misty. It was all worth it; everything was worth it.
The design studio also got on track. I won an international award for a medical assistance design that combined technology with humanistic care, and invitations from both domestic and international clients poured in.
I thought life would continue peacefully like this.
Until that afternoon, when my assistant rushed in, flustered: "Gu General, there's a man outside claiming to be your brother, and he won't leave the entrance."
My pen stopped moving.
Through the floor-to-ceiling window, I saw that familiar yet unfamiliar figure downstairs.
Zhou Mingxuan.
He had become unrecognizably thin after three years, his beard unkempt, completely devoid of the spirited demeanor he once had.
He knelt at the entrance of the studio, oblivious to the passersby pointing and whispering about him.
I walked out and stood in front of him.
"Gu Suri!" He suddenly looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "I've been looking for you for three years!"
I looked at him calmly. "What do you want?"
"Gu Suri, I was wrong; I really was!" He choked back tears. "I've searched the entire country for you, begging my parents for your address."
"I'll do anything if you can just forgive me!"
"Get up."
"No! If you don't forgive me, I won't get up!" Zhou Mingxuan cried like a child. "Gu Suri, I shouldn't have treated you that way. Please give me another chance."
Passersby began to gather, pointing and whispering.
“Zhou Mingxuan, do you have any idea how well I’ve been doing these past three years?”
He was taken aback.
“I have my own career, people who care about me, and a healthy, happy Anqi.” My voice was soft.
“And you? You’re no longer important.”
“No! Gu Suri, I love you! I’ve always loved you!” He nearly shouted in desperation. “Choosing Bai Luoluo back then was to protect you; I didn’t want you to suffer the pain of blood donation!”
I shook my head. “Your protection meant making me sacrifice myself time and again, becoming the one you abandoned in your calculations?”
“Gu Suri, I truly realize my mistakes!” He grasped the hem of my shirt. “Give me a chance to love you again!”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Your love is too heavy; I can’t bear it.”
Just then, Cheng Hao appeared.
He casually draped his arm over my shoulder and said to Zhou Mingxuan, “Mr. Zhou, I am Gu Suri’s partner and her fiancé.”
Zhou Mingxuan’s face instantly drained of color.
“Fiancé?”
“Yes.” Cheng Hao smiled gently. “Thank you for once caring for Gu Suri, but now she has me to protect her.”
At that moment, Anqi also walked out of the studio. She had grown much taller, her gaze clear yet distant.
Zhou Mingxuan’s eyes lit up with hope. “Anqi, will you forgive your brother? Can we go home?”
“No.” Anqi shook her head. “I’m very happy living with Suri Sister now.”
She walked over to me and linked her arm with mine. “Sister Su Li, let’s go back. Brother Cheng said he would make my favorite sweet and sour pork tonight.”
I nodded at Anqi and turned to Zhou Mingxuan, softly saying:
"Zhou Mingxuan, thank you for helping me see what true love and being loved really are."
"The past is the past."
"Gu Suri, don't..." He tried to grab my hand, but was stopped by Cheng Hao.
"Mr. Zhou, please have some self-respect."
I turned to leave when he suddenly shouted, "Gu Suri! I can't live without you!"
I paused but did not turn back.
"That's your problem."
The sunlight bathed the three of us in warmth and brightness.
Cheng Hao held my hand while Anqi linked her arm with mine as we walked forward.
Behind us, Zhou Mingxuan's heart-wrenching cries echoed, but I would never look back again.
Some people, some feelings, once missed, are lost for a lifetime.
And I have already embraced a new life.
[The End]
