For the past few days, Jia Mingdai appeared to be his usual self, but inside, he was quietly observing. He began to pay attention to every move of his family members, hoping to find evidence that would prove his suspicions wrong. However, something he never expected happened.
On the tenth day after returning home, while Jia Mingdai was in the yard repairing farming tools, he inadvertently overheard his father-in-law, Old Guo, chatting with the neighbor, Old Zhang.
"Old Zhang, let me tell you something," Old Guo said in a lowered voice, thinking Jia Mingdai couldn't hear him.
"What is it?" Old Zhang asked curiously.
Old Guo continued, "Actually, we’ve already discussed it. Once the kid is a bit older, we’ll kick him out."
Jia Mingdai froze with the hammer suspended in mid-air.
"Kick him out? What about the kid?" Old Zhang asked.
"The kid? The child is the root of our Guo family; what does he have to do with it?" Old Guo scoffed. "The house is ours, and so is the child. What right does that outsider have to dictate anything here?"
"But he is the child's father..."
"Father?" Old Guo interrupted Old Zhang. "Old Zhang, if it weren't for our family's poverty back then and the need for labor, who would want such a burden?"
"What do we do now?"
"Now? Now my daughter has a better option; Boss Wang is a thousand times better than him. After a while, we'll find an excuse to get rid of him and let my daughter be with Boss Wang."
Old Zhang sighed. "Isn't that a bit too heartless?"
"Heartless?" Old Guo sneered. "What kind of feelings can he expect as a live-in son-in-law? Letting him stay in our home for so many years has already been a favor!"
They had never regarded him as family; he was merely seen as free labor that could be discarded whenever they pleased.
That night, Jia Mingdai tossed and turned in bed unable to sleep. In the middle of the night, he heard his wife Guo Xiaofang's phone ring. Thinking Jia Mingdai was asleep, she tiptoed out to the yard to answer it. Jia Mingdai quietly followed her outside and hid behind the door to eavesdrop.
"Brother Wang, don’t worry; it won’t be long now," Guo Xiaofang continued. "My parents have already discussed it; once that burden is gone, we can be together."
Jia Mingdai felt as if the entire world was spinning around him.
"I know, I don't want to wait any longer either," Guo Xiaofang's voice was filled with disdain. "Brother Wang, do you think we should teach him a lesson and make him realize how difficult things are for him?"
A man's laughter came from the other end of the line. Although Jia Mingdai couldn't hear what was being said, Guo Xiaofang sounded very pleased.
"Alright, let's do it that way," Guo Xiaofang continued. "After all, he's just a live-in son-in-law; no one in this village will help him."
Upon hearing this, Jia Mingdai felt as if his heart was about to stop beating.
"Okay, I understand. Tomorrow I'll talk to my parents and figure out a way to make him leave," Guo Xiaofang concluded. "Brother Wang, I love you."
The call ended, and Guo Xiaofang quietly returned to her room.
Jia Mingdai stood in the yard, pretending as if he knew nothing.
That night, Shuangzhong Village was exceptionally quiet.
Jia Mingdai sat in the yard, trying to convince himself to calm down. Perhaps there was still a chance for things to turn around; maybe he could choose to leave and start anew.
But every time he thought of his father-in-law's words—"that useless person thinks he belongs to our family"—and his wife's comment on the phone calling him a "burden," along with his mother-in-law pointing at him and scolding him as "useless," his anger erupted like a volcano ready to explode.
