It seems I must be more cautious—she seems to have some inkling of my plans! 0

As the night darkened, I walked under the shade of the trees, pondering over the troubling matters that weighed on my mind. 0

On the sidewalk, a couple strolled closely together, whispering sweet nothings that could nearly melt the snow. 0

Seeing such a scene, I couldn't help but shake my head and let out a bitter laugh, lamenting the illusion behind their tender moments. Not long ago, I too reveled in the carefree beginnings of youth, only to find myself ensnared by the harshness of reality, unable to escape! 0

Lost in thought, I looked up and realized I had arrived at my apartment building. I noticed that the bright window on the third floor had suddenly gone dark. 0

"What kind of nonsense is this?" I guessed my wife, Lisa, must be home; otherwise, the lights wouldn't have gone out so abruptly—but why turn off the lights? 0

I hurried up the stairs, each step deliberate and quiet, my toes barely making a sound. 0

Before long, I stood outside the door. Gently pushing it open, I found the living room shrouded in darkness, with only a cold draft blowing through. 0

"Why are the lights off?" I asked Lisa with a tone laced with frustration as I fumbled to find the switch. 0

"Hold on!" A strong male voice suddenly pierced through my ears, causing my trembling right hand to freeze in mid-air. 0

"Who are you?" After a moment of shock, I managed to ask in confusion. 0

"Please, have a seat." I saw a vague shadow on the opposite sofa gesture for me to sit down. With such calmness, he undoubtedly was the one in control. "Don't be afraid! I'm just an ordinary thief—nothing more." 0

“Hmm…” I felt a bit confused, unsure of how to respond. 0

After a moment of silence, he spoke first. “How should I put this?” The self-proclaimed thief paused slightly; I couldn’t tell if he was scratching his nose or rubbing his face, then continued, “Actually, I’m quite sorry. I arrived here around ten this morning. At that time, I rummaged through the entire place, but good grief, I couldn’t find a single valuable item. As lunch time approached and my stomach started growling, I thought I’d just make do with whatever you had here. Oh, I should confess that I also drank half a bottle of your red wine.” 0

Upon hearing this, I wondered if this guy had eaten and drunk his fill at home before oversleeping and just waking up now. In any case, he was an extremely arrogant fellow who spoke as if he were in the right despite his wrongdoing. 0

“Ha! You really are…” I was about to say “bold,” but for some reason, I opted for a more catchy phrase instead: “You’re quite carefree!” 0

“Cough! You’re not mocking me, are you?” He yawned and continued, “You should let me finish! This embarrassing story is definitely worth sharing with you—after filling my belly with food and drink, I thought about taking a nap. Your mattress seemed decent enough, soft enough for me to just flop down and sleep until just now.” He yawned again, “Damn it, my tolerance for alcohol can’t be that bad!” 0

“Since you woke up first, why didn’t you escape before I got back?” I sensed something was off. “Are you planning to have a heart-to-heart talk with me?” 0

“Ha… haha…” He laughed maniacally, his movements exaggerated in the darkness. “You’re really clever; you guessed it right! That’s exactly what I intend to do!” 0

This left me even more incredulous. Resting my chin on my hand, I curiously asked, “So you want to… blackmail me? If that’s the case, I think you’ve got the wrong person!” 0

“No, no, no! You misunderstood me. I’m here to help you out; I’m your savior! How could you say that I want to blackmail you?” After saying this, he seemed to pull out a heavy set of keys from his pocket that clinked as he fumbled around for something. It took me a while to realize he was looking for nail clippers to trim his nails. 0

“What do you mean?” Sitting up straight, I listened to him clip his nails on the opposite side and asked, “Can you elaborate?” 0

“Don’t you want…” He lowered his voice deliberately and said in a deep tone, “…to kill your wife?” 0

I swallowed hard and cleared my throat nonchalantly. “Hey! You really know how to joke!” 0

"Old Brother! I'm not one to joke around; I've always been known as a kind-hearted, honest, and serious thief!" He seemed to have finished trimming his nails, stuffing the keys into his pocket before continuing, "What I'm saying is by no means baseless. Besides, this isn't exactly a National Secret, so there's no need to be so serious about it!" 0

He called me "serious"! If he wasn't genuinely trying to help me, then he was simply asking for trouble. To utter such an ill-timed remark made my fists clench involuntarily; I realized my fists were not much different from the 'big vinegar jar' fists that Wu Song used to fight the tiger. 0

"From the sound of your tone, it seems you're quite confident in your own judgment!" I thought I would probe a little further into his attitude. 0
