Su Yuntang and Hu Qingxi quickly reached an agreement. They decided that Hu Qingxi must leave as far away as possible three days before the wedding, never to return.
"Wen Jin has been prepared for a long time; all I need is for you to buy me three days. My parents will surely be furious and send people to search everywhere, so we need this time to get as far away as we can," Su Yuntang explained.
Hu Qingxi paused, filled with doubts about the plan. "Su Yuntang, I still feel uncertain. Not to mention whether my parents will agree to your substitution after they find out, even if you successfully marry into the Long Family, what if they discover your true identity? Not only would you face severe consequences, but the Long and Hu Families would also end up at odds. At that point..."
Su Yuntang gently patted Hu Qingxi's hand in reassurance. "Do not worry, Miss. I have my ways to convince your father and mother to agree to my substitution. As for marrying into the Long Family... this is also an opportunity for me. And I promise you, I will do everything in my power to protect myself and the Hu Family."
Hu Qingxi stared intently into Su Yuntang's eyes and whispered, "Su Yuntang, why are you willing to take such risks? The Long Family is not a gentle place..."
Su Yuntang calmly met Hu Qingxi's gaze. "I have my own considerations, but you can rest assured that I will never do anything that would harm the Hu Family."
Seeing that Su Yuntang was unwilling to elaborate further, Hu Qingxi did not press on. The two of them then meticulously discussed their excuses, the selection of companions for the journey, and other details until they finally parted ways in the dead of night.
On the first day of May in the thirteenth year of Jiajing, it was the eve of the wedding between the Long and Hu Families.
As dawn broke, Hu Qingxi finished her grooming and went to Madam Hu's courtyard with Su Yuntang.
"Mother," she called softly, greeting her before sitting beside Madam Hu. "I am about to get married, and I feel quite anxious. I heard that going to An Guo Temple for blessings is very effective; I would like to go there to pray for peace for our family. May I take Su Yuntang with me for a couple of days?"
While speaking, Hu Qingxi dared not meet her mother's gaze.
Madam Hu set down her teacup, frowning slightly as she looked back and forth between her daughter and Su Yuntang. "With the wedding so close at hand, why are you thinking about going out?"
"Mother," Hu Qingxi suddenly stood up and faced her mother, kneeling down. "After I get married... it will be difficult for me to go out again. Please, let me go."
This kneeling was heartfelt; it could very well be their last meeting. Thinking of this made Hu Qingxi unable to hold back her tears.
Madam Hu's heart softened at the sight and she quickly beckoned a nearby maid to help her daughter up. "Good child, get up and speak; why are you crying? It’s not that I won’t allow you to go; I’m just worried about your safety."
"Madam," Su Yuntang stepped forward and spoke softly, "I promise to take good care of Miss along the way; I will ensure she faces no danger."
Madam Hu glanced at Su Yuntang and nodded. Since entering the household, Su Yuntang had indeed been cautious and thorough in her work without making any mistakes; she was a reliable person.
After continuous pleas from Hu Qingxi, Madam Hu finally relented.
She stroked her daughter's hair with love in her eyes. "You two should leave early and return early; do not delay important matters." She turned to Su Yuntang and instructed, "Make sure to bring Liu Mama along; she has watched Qing Xi grow up and knows her daily routines well. With her accompanying you, I will feel more at ease."
