At this moment, Hu Qingxi's heart was filled with mixed emotions. Throughout her life, her mother had been strict in her teachings, but she had always cared for her deeply. Now, in pursuit of her own happiness, she was about to leave without saying goodbye, and she feared that they might never meet again. Just thinking about it made tears well up in Hu Qingxi's eyes, and she hurriedly lowered her head.
"Alright," Madam Hu gently embraced her daughter and used a handkerchief to wipe away the tears at the corners of her eyes. "It's a day of great joy; why are you crying? Hurry up and get ready. The sooner you go, the sooner you'll be back."
Hu Qingxi nodded and took her leave along with Su Yuntang and Liu Mama. Just before stepping out the door, she couldn't help but glance back at her mother, whose eyes now showed faint lines of age. In that moment, Hu Qingxi almost wanted to abandon her plan to elope. Su Yuntang noticed her emotional turmoil and gently tugged at her sleeve.
Hu Qingxi bit her lip and finally turned to leave.
Once everything was packed, Hu Qingxi set off for An Guo Temple with Su Yuntang and Liu Mama. Throughout the journey, she fidgeted in her seat, occasionally pulling back the carriage curtain to look outside.
"Miss, are you nervous about the wedding?" Liu Mama observed Hu Qingxi's distracted demeanor and assumed it was due to anxiety. "Don't worry; we’re going to An Guo Temple to pray for blessings. It will surely bring good fortune, and everything will go smoothly."
Hu Qingxi merely responded with a soft "mm," her gaze briefly meeting Su Yuntang's as they shared an unspoken understanding.
Just after the hour of Shen, the carriage finally came to a stop in front of An Guo Temple. The three women stepped into the temple through dappled light and shadows, greeted by the mingled scents of incense and sandalwood.
"This way, please." A young monk led them to a guest room in the eastern courtyard. "Ladies, please rest here; vegetarian meals will be served after the evening prayers."
Liu Mama nodded in thanks and began tidying up the room. Su Yuntang took out a tea set from their belongings and naturally started brewing tea. With her back turned to Liu Mama, she discreetly pulled out a small porcelain vial from her sleeve, crushed three pills from it, and quietly dissolved them into the tea.
"Mama, don’t busy yourself just yet; you've been on the carriage for half a day—take a break," Su Yuntang said as she handed over a teacup. "I brought some chrysanthemum tea to help cool you down and relieve fatigue."
Liu Mama wiped away sweat and smiled. "Su Yuntang is truly thoughtful."
She accepted the teacup and took a small sip. "This is good tea—bitter yet sweet, with a lingering aftertaste."
After finishing a cup of tea, Liu Mama suddenly felt her eyelids grow heavy and began to yawn repeatedly.
"Strange, why am I suddenly so sleepy..." She rubbed her eyes.
"Madam, why don't you rest for a bit? Perhaps it's the fatigue from the journey." Su Yuntang stepped forward, gently assisting Liu Mama to lie down.
Liu Mama nodded drowsily, and in no time, she was fast asleep.
Su Yuntang tried calling her a few times and gave her a gentle push, but Liu Mama showed no response at all.
She turned to Hu Qingxi and nodded, "The medicine is taking effect."
Hu Qingxi anxiously bit her lip, "Madam... she won't be in any danger, will she?"
"She will be fine; Madam will just sleep for the next couple of days." Su Yuntang said as she took out a plain set of clothes from the bottom of the bag and handed it to Hu Qingxi. "It's getting late; Miss, please change quickly."
Hu Qingxi quickly changed into the plain clothes while Su Yuntang helped her style a simple hairdo and then placed a veil hat on her head.
"Young Master Lu should be waiting at the back door by now." Su Yuntang glanced at the darkening sky outside and said softly.
The two of them carefully exited the guest room, passing through the side hall where the monks were performing evening prayers, and arrived at the back door of the temple.
