The two of them returned to the Hu Residence in silence. They knew that this matter could not be concealed any longer, so they headed straight to Madam Hu's courtyard.
Madam Hu had just woken from her afternoon nap and was startled to see their serious expressions. "What happened? Where is Qing Xi?"
Su Yuntang and Liu Mama immediately knelt down, with Liu Mama handing over the letter. "Madam... the young lady... she left this letter and then left..."
Upon hearing this, Madam Hu's tea cup fell from her hand with a loud crash, shattering into pieces. "What are you saying?"
After reading the contents of the letter, Madam Hu's face turned ashen as she slumped onto the couch.
"What happened?" Old Hu rushed in upon hearing the commotion and quickly asked when he saw his wife's unusual demeanor.
Madam Hu weakly handed the letter to her husband.
Old Hu read through it and felt a surge of anger rise within him as he tore the letter into shreds.
"Outrageous!" he roared. "This ungrateful child! How dare she conspire with that Lu Wenjin and elope?!"
It was important to note that the marriage between the Hu Family and the Long Family was of great significance. The Hu Family was a Yangzhou salt merchant; although they were wealthy, they lacked official backing. In contrast, the Long Family was part of the Cao Yun Family and had connections with many officials in court.
If this marriage were to succeed, the Hu Family could leverage the Long Family's influence to gain access to more salt licenses. Now, with Hu Qingxi's wedding approaching, her sudden flight was akin to delivering a heavy blow to the family's fortunes.
"Master, we must urgently send someone to pursue them!"
Madam Hu quickly regained her composure as the head matriarch.
Old Hu nodded in agreement.
He immediately summoned the steward. "You go personally to the Lu Family and gather information about Lu Wenjin. At the same time, arrange for our servants to secretly track down Qing Xi and Lu Wenjin's whereabouts!"
The steward accepted his orders and left, while Madam Hu turned towards Su Yuntang and Liu Mama, who were still kneeling on the ground.
She understood Liu Mama well; Liu Mama was cautious and meticulous, never daring to get involved in elopement matters. Madam Hu stared at Su Yuntang for a long moment and said slowly, "How did Qing Xi manage to escape right under your noses? Did you assist her?"
Su Yuntang lowered her head, remaining silent. Madam Hu took her silence as an admission and slammed her palm on the table. "Speak quickly! Where did Qing Xi go with that Lu Wenjin?"
Calmly, Su Yuntang replied, "Madam, I truly do not know where the young lady has gone."
"Impudent!" Madam Hu shouted. "You helped Qing Xi escape; how could you not know her whereabouts? Speak honestly! Otherwise, you will face severe consequences!"
Su Yuntang maintained her composure. "Madam, I genuinely do not know where the young lady went. Why would she tell me such an important matter… Is she not afraid I would inform you?"
"Someone! Search her residence!" Madam Hu narrowed her eyes, coldly glaring at Su Yuntang. "Lock her in the woodshed in the back courtyard. No one is to let her out without my orders!"
"Wait!" Su Yuntang suddenly looked up. "Master, Madam, with the wedding of the Long and Hu Families approaching, the pressing issue now is how to prevent the Long Family from discovering that the young lady has eloped, in order to protect both families' reputations. I… might have a solution..."
