Zhang Wenwen glared at the high-end door panel, feeling as if she owed Zhu Boyun from a past life. Why else would she be delivering goods to him at midnight? Was it just because she was a courier who deserved to suffer?
If it weren't for the overtime pay that could help with her rent, she wouldn't have come at all. But the most bizarre part was Zhu Boyun himself, staying up late for some delivery.
She couldn't help but feel frustrated; this was her first late-night delivery since starting her job, and it was to that same Zhu Boyun who had bullied her back in college.
He was the only client who could provoke her enough to kick a door. After a series of loud knocks, a smiling face peeked through the crack: "Hi!"
"Hi, my foot," Zhang Wenwen retorted, tossing the package at him. "Sign here."
"That might not be possible," Zhu Boyun replied, shaking his head as he reached out and pulled her into the room by her neck. "I need your help with something important."
She shot him an annoyed glance and swiftly kicked his right leg, successfully breaking free from his grip. Her instincts told her that being called over at this hour could only mean trouble.
"Who is it?" A woman suddenly emerged from inside. Upon seeing a woman at the door, she immediately adopted a hostess demeanor and reached out to take the package. Then she screamed.
Zhang Wenwen rolled her eyes; the woman dropped what she was holding, which made a loud thud and emitted suspicious crackling sounds. Looking down, Zhang's mouth twitched in disbelief.
"Zhu Boyun, you can be even weirder than this."
Zhu Boyun shrugged nonchalantly. "You brought this over at midnight just to play with me, right?"
The woman's gasps drowned out Zhang Wenwen's low curses. Just as she raised her face to scold him, she felt a sudden heat on her cheeks as the woman shrieked, "You shameless woman! How dare you seduce my man!"
That was enough! Zhang Wenwen's patience had reached its limit. In a fit of rage, she stomped hard on Zhu Boyun's foot, then elegantly swung her right hand to slap the woman across the face before kicking the wriggling object on the ground, sending it flying out of the room with a satisfying thud.
She grabbed the woman's collar and said, "I'm going to steal your man. What are you going to do about it?" Her eyes were filled with fierce determination.
The woman was momentarily stunned before erupting into hysteria. Zhang Wenwen glanced at Zhu Boyun, who was watching the scene unfold, and suddenly realized that her presence, combined with a little chaos she had caused, had made her a pawn in that scummy man's game.
So he couldn't get rid of the woman and decided to use her as a shield, huh? Zhang Wenwen abruptly released her grip and sighed dramatically, "My brother has this flaw; he can't seem to shake off women after he's played with them. He always drags me into these situations. I realize now that I'm just enabling his misdeeds... You're a good woman. From your exquisite makeup and fiery figure, I can tell you're definitely a good sister-in-law. How could I possibly harm a good woman that heaven has bestowed upon my brother?"
The woman instinctively adjusted her clothes. After hearing Zhang Wenwen's words, she nodded vigorously, feeling as if her heart had been touched. "So you're the little sister! I was really rude just now."
Zhang Wenwen chuckled, "That little gift was my way of honoring you as my future sister-in-law. It won't interfere with you two. See you!" After casting a triumphant glance at the smiling Zhu Boyun, she headed down the stairs.
Zhu Boyun's apartment was on the first floor. Unlike others who entered through a digital security door, he had designed a staircase and a grand entrance beside his unit, flaunting his wealth. But this arrangement worked well for her; it allowed her to deliver goods directly without needing to press any buttons on the digital door.
Just as she took a couple of steps, she suddenly felt a sharp pain strike her head, radiating down to her spine. Accompanied by the woman's scream and Zhu Boyun's shout, she felt her body weaken and collapse down the stairs. Her mind buzzed with noise; everything sounded distant and unclear. The shattered flowerpot beside her confirmed it—she had been hit.
Zhu Boyun hurriedly jumped down the stairs. "Call for help! Hurry!" He shouted frantically at the stunned people behind him while gently lifting Zhang Wenwen in his arms.
"Don't be afraid; you'll be fine."
"You... jerk, I knew... meeting you at midnight... would lead to trouble." She half-closed her eyes, her consciousness fading. "It should have been you who got hit." Her head tilted, and she fell into darkness.
His panicked calls echoed far away...
With her eyes closed, Zhang Wenwen couldn't see the worry and fear etched on Zhu Boyun's face as he held her tightly. His hands trembled as they continued to grip her until they reached the ambulance, never letting go.
