Soon, they noticed a two-story building located in a relatively secluded area. The house was right next to the back wall of the community, and the surroundings were quiet, making it an ideal place to "make a move."
More importantly, they discovered a white Jeep parked in front of the house.
"There's a car; it must belong to someone wealthy," Huang Ligang said, his eyes gleaming. "This is the place."
However, Cheng Liang was more cautious. After observing for a while, he said, "Hold on; we need to figure out how many people are inside."
The two found an inconspicuous corner nearby and began to watch the house.
After squatting there for an hour, they saw a man around forty years old come out of the house and drive away in the white Jeep. Cheng Liang whispered, "That should be the owner; he definitely looks like a boss."
They then noticed several people coming in and out, including a woman and a child.
Huang Ligang frowned and asked, "Why are there so many people?"
"Maybe they're renting," Cheng Liang speculated. "A lot of people do that now—subletting their homes to others."
Their subsequent observations further confirmed their suspicions. At least four or five people lived in that house, and its layout was more complicated than they had imagined.
Huang Ligang grew anxious. "What if something goes wrong with so many people?"
"What are you afraid of?" Cheng Liang sneered. "If it comes to that, we just take care of them all."
These words sent a shiver down Huang Ligang's spine, but he quickly reminded himself that since they had already made up their minds, there was no turning back.
In the evening, the man returned driving his car.
The two observed closely and noted that this man was quite burly, standing at least 1.75 meters tall with a strong build.
"This guy won't be easy to deal with," Huang Ligang said worriedly. "What if he fights back?"
Cheng Liang patted his waist. "That's why we need to prepare our tools. I have a knife; you need to get one too."
"Are we really going to... kill someone?"
"Do you think robbery is child's play?" Cheng Liang shot him a fierce glare. "Once we decide to do this, we need to be clean and efficient. Leaving witnesses only invites trouble."
In the end, they decided to act that very night.
At 8 PM, lights turned on in the house. The two crouched outside the wall, peering through the window to observe what was happening inside.
They saw the man watching television in the living room while the woman busied herself in the kitchen, with several other individuals in their respective rooms.
"There are people on the first floor, and there are people on the second floor," Cheng Liang whispered. "We need to start from the second floor; that should be the owner's room, where all the good stuff is."
"How do we get in?" Huang Ligang asked.
Cheng Liang pointed to the back of the house. "We can climb over the wall and then get to the second-floor windowsill. I've checked; the bars on that window are a bit loose."
At midnight, the entire house fell into darkness.
"We still have to wait," Cheng Liang said, glancing at his watch. "They’re not dead asleep yet; let’s wait another two or three hours."
At 3 a.m., it was the time when people were at their most drowsy.
Cheng Liang nudged Huang Ligang. "It's time to move."
The two quietly climbed over the wall and made their way to the back of the house. Cheng Liang went up first while Huang Ligang stood below to support him. But just as Cheng Liang was prying open the window, it made a loud "crack" sound.
"Uh-oh!" Huang Ligang's heart raced.
Sure enough, footsteps could be heard from upstairs. Someone had been awakened.
"What do we do now?" Huang Ligang asked, sweating profusely.
Cheng Liang remained unusually calm. "Since we’ve been discovered, we’ll have to go all out. Remember, we can't leave any witnesses!"
With that, Cheng Liang drew a sharp dagger from his waist, a glint of murderous intent flashing in his eyes.
Huang Ligang watched Cheng Liang's dagger, his heart pounding faster.
